I'm a 13, soon to be 14, year old golfer and can hit all of my clubs consistently.  Ranging (yardage) from0-240 with all clubs, I can get the ball where I want, usually.  I can tell I have backspin on the ball, but don't have enough to get the backwards move.  I can get GIR most of the Par 4's, and Par 5's,  but sometimes I will over-hit the ball, thinking the backspin will bring it back.

Ex.  Cog HIll Course 1 Hole 59 Forward Pin set(Par 4):  I hit a drive 230 yrds dow the center.  Get up in 2 with a pitching wedge at 57 yrds. out, I hit GIR but the ball rolled to the back of the green(and the putt was downhill and there were some ridges which would throw the ball off).  The ball did have backspin(divot showed it), but not enough.  Can somebody tell me how to get more?

lay up to a full swing distance, that ProV1 will stop with a full swing.

Honestly Ben, I think that no one around our age (13-14) can really put a lot of spin on the ball. Because we have slower swing speeds (85-93) it is harder for people our age to compress the ball. I barely gat my sand wedge to roll back a couple feet, much less my irons. I get a decent amount of spin because I take a steeper shoulder turn wich helps me really hit down on and compress the ball. Work on hitting down on the ball and I promise you will get more spin.

PS. A full swing will give you more spin.

There are so many things that make the ball spin backwards. It depends on how much you actually pinch the ball between the club and the turf. You also need a good, tight lie in the fairway. And hitting to a soft green helps a lot. It doesn't matter who you are, young player like yourself or a Tour player, if the lie and green aren't right the ball will not spin backwards. There are a number of players that think it looks great to see the ball spin back from behind the hole, but there are just as many player even on Tour that understand that a lot of times you need to land the ball a bit short and let it jump forward a little bit. The amount of spin required to move a ball backwards is sometimes very hard to control. I have seen balls that look great and when the player gets to the green they find that it has spun too much and is off the front of the green or has spin so far from where it landed that what should have been a good birdie chance has turned into a lot of work to save par. My advice is to learn how much you spin the ball with your average shot. Does it bounce once and roll a few feet or does it bounce a few times and roll a long way? The first tells me that your ball flight is pretty good and you are making solid contact. If this is the case, just keep it up and as you grow the ball will start to spin a bit more. If it the second, you need to look at the ball flight. Get a second opinion. I would bet that it is a bit too low and if that is the case it wil always jump forward. This reminds me of a clinic a saw Sam Snead giving. He was hitting these wonderful 9 irons from a very tight fairway. They were landing on the green and taking a small hop forward anf then spinning back a foot or two. Someone asked hime; "Sam, how do you get the ball to back up?". Without even thinking he asking in reply; "What club do you hit from 150 yards?", The man replied "a 5 iron". Sam looked at him and said "Sir, if you need a 5 iron from 150, why do you want the ball to back up?". Spinning the ball back isn't the key to lower scores. It may make your friends go "WOW!" but the key to lower scores is ball control. Knowing how far the ball will go, both in the air and on the ground, will help you lower your scores more than firing the ball behind the pin and trying to back it up to the hole! Best of Luck for the development of your game.....

What 19hole hits the nail on the head. He is an active Pro Golfer and knows what he is talking about. I have taken tips from him in another forum and he hasn't let me down yet. As to back spin, pinching the ball takes a lot of practice and I only achieve it once in a while. I have concentrated more on how far I hit the ball with each club and how it lands in relation to being on and off the green. It really helps.

i disagree with that i am 13 i did this when i was 12 but i can consitantly hit great golf shots with back spin even from the bunkers my frist time i got the ball to back up was out of the bunker and i celebrated like i had hit a ace. what i do is i choke down on the club and twist my body

hahahaha hole 59. But most of the time at our age its not backspin that makes the ball stop it's the height of the ball, and just because there is a divot on the green doesn't mean you hit it with backspin i would not trust back spin at our age and expect a little roll... By the way i cant tell which hole it is but hole 5 is a 300 par 4 and you drove it 230 so to get on in 2 with a 57 yard shot isn't possible. And hole 9 is a 400 yard par 4 and once a again it's not possible.

     Glad to help,

    Jake

You are still 13 mate, give it a year or two and you will grow some muscle and increase your swing speed. Using a fitted set of forged steel irons will help along with a Pro v1 ball. But for now, keep practising and seeking advice from a professional.

keep it up and good luck.

Don't worry too much about it right now. Just keep working on your game and it will get there. The ground under the ball has a lot to do with it, it's not all swing mechanics. Durring the summer months here in texas the ground is so dry and hard you cant put spin on a ball even if you wanted to.

hey ben, to get alot of spin you dont hve to swing hard its all about making CRISP contact. also if ur really desperate to spin the ball try the nike 20xis golf ball its very soft. the only problem with them is the wear so so quickly. this is a great channel on youtube and i think it will help... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gCEMUhDMgyY

The best suggestion I have is to pick up a club with more loft. As weird as this sounds, I sometimes make full shots with sand wedges. If you have a 58-60 degree lob wedge I would try using that.
