TEAM  -- im looking for help,,what is the correct tees for a 12 handicap?    I keep getting  suggestions but no one has ever given me any tangible reason for their suggestion .. I was once told that you should go by how far you carry your 5i but  that guy could not remember the formula. ..  Another was always two tees up from tips ,didn't make since to me. another ofcourse is yardage but i cant seem to get any three people to agree on what that is .. Any  help would help i just want a solid reason for any suggestion           THANX--------------madgolfer

Start at the back, look at the par 3's, keep moving forward until they are not out of your range, you have found the correct tees.

  3. Mad Golfer,

I was always told to go by the average Par 4's. The idea is to be hitting middle irons into the greens (GIR) to give yourself the best chance to two putt to save par. If your hitting long irons then the tee's you are using are too far back. If your mostly hitting wedges then you are to close. Go by the average Par 4's and you will challenge yourself and still have fun. You don't want it to be to easy but then you also want to make sure you can get to the greens in two on the par 4's, if you can't get GIR's how are you gonna make par? I'm an 11 and play from the tips and still hit some wedges into some par 4's.

I am in the same boat as you. I am a 10 hcp and at my club I play from the "men's tee- (white)" which plays around 6500 yards. There are 2 par 4's I hardly ever reach in regulation and when I do I am hitting a 3 wood into them. I have never been on the par 5's in two putting for eagle. I will be 65 in March and do not hit the ball as far as a few years ago. The senior tees at my club play at 6000-(black) yards. The unwritten rule is that you ought to be 70 years old to play these tees, but I have played from them on occasion in MGA events and when I feel like it. I plan to play from these tees more often this year as frankley it is a lot more fun. I can reach the two par 4's mentioned above with a mid iron or shorter and I have been on the par 5's in two on occasion. Golf is supposed to be fun so play from the tees that make it that way. One more thing. I may play the white tees but on the two long par 4's (or what ever hole I want)I may play them from the blacks.

GOLF SHOULD BE FUN! Unless your making money in tournaments or even your weekend match vs friends, there is no problem switching tees throughout the round. If you are steping up to a Par 3 playing from the tips at stretches over 200 yards and dont have the shot in your bag, move up and play it from the 180 yard tee. If you step up to say a 575 yard Par 5 and you know that your best two shots can, at best, still leave you with 150 yards out, you should probably move up. Even the PGA tour doesn't play every tee at the tips during tournaments, rather they decide what makes for a better fan experience or better scoring opportunities to even the playing field. I was at a few days of the 2009 US Open on Bethpage Black. During the practice rounds some of the shorter hitters on the Tour weren't even reaching the fairway of #10 from the tips. Throughout the tournament they never used the tips. At the 2008 US Open, during the Rocco vs TW Playoff, the USGA (knowing #18 was well in TWs reach and not Roccos) moved the last hole up from 575 to 527 to even the playing field. Well we dont have thousands of fans watching, and we are not playing for millions so we do not owe a better experience to any one but ourselves, our group, and the groups around us. No need to struggle anymore than this game already makes us struggle. Play within your game, and most of all Enjoy the Game.

I get my course handicap and use the yardage on the score card to see what tee set would be best for me. Most of the courses have a handicap/tee box suggestion. That works for me :-)

I am a 7 handicap and currently play at 6000 yards. But this is not based on score, it's based on distance. I hit the ball about 230 of the tee. This means that I can go driver mid-iron to short iron to wedge into almost every green on my course. If you hit it 270 of the tee, play 6300 or 6400 yards. If you are hitting longer than that (280-310) you should play all the way back. Just work on the other parts of your game and your handicap will come down. Remember, the smart player can putt and chip better than he can drive the ball.

PGA/USGA are promoting Tee It Forward. Driver length -> course length: 200 yds -> 5200-5400, 225 ->5800-6000, 250 -> 6200-6400, and 275 -> 6700-6900. If you find yourself using fairway woods more than irons, you might want to move up. If you use a PW on a 400 yard par 4 for an approach shot, move back. Not to say that when I play the gold tees on an 8100 yard course tomorrow that I won't be waiting for guys in the fairway after booming 240 yard drives from the tips. Jack Nicklaus decided it was time to play with the amateurs on Pro-Ams when he was using driver/4W on par 4s.
