    Hello everyone,

I play Titleist AP2s with TrueTemper Dynamic Gold Shafts and my ball flight is extremely high. I tend to hit my irons much shorter than I probably should, and find that when I play in any kind of wind (even the slightest of upper level breezes) my ball flight is significantly effected.

My typical distances for a few key clubs are: Pitching Wedge: 120 yds   8-iron: 140 yds   6-iron: 160 yds   4-iron: 190 yds

I tend to hit down on the ball very significantly and generate quite a bit of spin with my shots. I keep the ball pretty much centered in my stance, but my hands are set on the club with my right hand (I am right-handed) slightly open at address. I tend to cut the ball about 5 yds on most shots (just something I've adjusted my aim for, now).

Any tips to help me lower my ball flight would be great, I'd love to squeeze an extra 10 yards or so out of my irons.

    Thanks!

You did not say what flex your TTDG shafts are but for me the stiffer the shaft the lower the ball trajectory. You will need to try hitting some AP2s with a stiffer shaft to see if that would help and not lose distance. Also you may want to play the ball back just a hair from where you are playing them now and play with a slightly closed stance to promote a draw. A draw will give you a few extra yards over a fade. I don't usually hit a ball this way but if I need to keep a ball low, I do not shift my weight on the back swing and keep my arms on the follow through low. I use this swing to stay under tree branches, etc.

Sounds like you may need a stiffer shaft if you feel like the ball is spinning too much or "ballooning".  What kind of shafts do you have in your AP2's?

DRoss I can definately relate to high ball flight. I'm 6'2" with 37" arms and I hit it very high as well. When I was newer to the game I struggled with this immensely. The last thing you want to do is try to hit the ball harder into a headwind. Take more club and swing easy, at least 1 more club for every 10mph of wind. An easy way to figure the wind is to take some grass, hold it out at shoulder length, every 10ft it travels when you release it will constitute about 10mph of wind. Sometimes you may have to hit a 4 iron from 160 if your into a very strong wind. Par is a good score when your hitting into a strong headwind. Use it to your advantage off the tee downwind. Forget the driver, use the 3 wood. You won't believe how far you can hit it! My 3 wood usually carries 235 off the tee, Ive hit it 290 downwind several times. Don't worry about distance off the irons, distance control is much more important. I've hit 5 iron into the wind where my opponent hit 7, but I don't let that bother me. Especially when I end up inside of him!

I would not change that if I were you. My dad was a scratch golfer in highschool playing from professional yardages with that kind of distance. I am in 8th grade and I hit my 4 about 170 max. I am a 6 handicap from 6400-6600 yards. Accuracy is the key.

I am just going to go along with everyone saying to check you shaft flex. Also, try to avoid hitting down so much on the ball, hitting down is what causes it to jump up quicker. I am not saying to try and pick it clean but allow for less down-force.  As far as that fade goes, that is not a bad shot style to be playing, especially if it is consistent.
