Better Driving

  1. Hi guys,

My main detriment to my game is driving. I hit the ball about 255-290 yards, but most of my shots a have tail of fade to them. In every club I hit a draw, but my driver contradicts every aspect of the rest of my game. Right now I have a 910 D3 9.5 with a Project X-7C3 tip stiff 73 gram shaft set at A•3. Driving is a scare to me in many situations and I need some help. I have a feeling it's because I am swinging too hard, but I just can't make a consistent driver swing.

Here are my other distances if it helps.

    3W - 255

    2H - 235

    3 - 210

    4 - 200

    5 - 190

    6 - 180

    7 - 170

    8 - 160

    9 - 150

    PW - 135

    54 - 110

    58 - 85

    Thanks a lot

you answered your own problem your swining to hard. i know that its hard to try to "swing less hard" but here is a peice of advice. do try to slow your back swing down alittle bit. slow it down to a point where you feel you are in complete control of the club. when your body starts getting thight from this rotation you know your at the top. 2. when you start your down swing start slower. this means feel 80% at the start of your swing. you can start speeding up when your arms and hands start droping below your back shoulder. this helps becouse you need to get the club started on plane under control once you club starts moving and you start speeding up you will have more control during the bottom of your down swing becouse you established that control at the top. 3. focus on that in side to out swing. line up on your target line like normal but as you comite to a down swing try hitting the ball slightly to the right of your target line. and be sure your fallow threw is strong. dont stop the swing at the ball. stop swinging at waist level. if your doing all these thing properly you will load the shaft nicely and get more center face strikes and hit be ball more consistantly farther. if not your shaft may not be right for you. i have seen that shaft on the off the shelf models and the torgue on that shaft my not be right for your swing. you seem to be hitting your irons and hybrid pretty good distances.

Here is a technique my instructor taught me... this is to fight my slice, fade, push fade, etc...

During setup when you are about to hit the ball, hang your driver (don't let it touch the ground).  (It's like mimicing the point of impact, the ball right at the sweet spot of the driver.)  Then when you put the driver head down naturally, you will notice that the ball is now setup near the toe of the driver.  That should be the correct position of the ball during setup (when you ground your driver).  By doing this, we try to avoid hitting the ball near the heel of the driver.

It's been working for me and I've been hitting a lot of good drives lately.  Hope this helps.

    Nice.

I tend to slice my driver a lot, it goes to the right like 50 yards sometimes. The rest of my clubs don't have this problem.

    Any tips?

Paul Wilson of Revolution Golf stated in one of his videos the reason people slice is they swing  too hard (arms take over and you come over the top).   Try swinging your driver like the rest of your clubs - you may be surprised how far you hit it!
