Hey TT, I'm in need of some putting tips.

Lately I haven't been hitting the sweet spot consistently, which is hurting my speed and not getting to the hole. My misses are just slightly toward the toe.

If I can get more consistent hits, I can shave a couple strokes.

    Thanks TT

  2. What I do when I'm having trouble hitting the sweet spot on my putter.

I tape two small pieces of balsa wood on the putter. That are just a little outside the sweet spot.

So if you miss the spot, then the ball hits the wood strips. If you can make putts without hitting the wood, then thats what you want.

Thanks guys, I will try those drills. I have been using impact tape and a drill similar to the wood strips, except I use rubber bands instead of wood. I'm not missing by much, but thats all it takes.

Lipped 4 birdie putts today. Pretty sure they would have fell if I hit that juicy sweet spot.

This definately test's my mental game. But , that what doesn't kill you only makes you stronger.

Lefty's gate drill is spot on.  You'll deliver the putterface square more often than not.

Thanks Josh, can you explain the gate drill a little more? I can't remember, is it the one with tee's at the heel and toe? Kinda forgot about that one. Thanks

Two good drills that I use.   One is to tape a small tee in the center of the putter face and make strokes to hit the ball with the tee the emphasis is good contact . The second is the gate drill using two tees hit the ball to the target without hitting the tees  on either side , make the distance just wider than  the length of the putter face ..   Hope these help

hope this helps - work on making a stroke, rather than a hit.  so your stroke is the same speed back and through, no actual hit, just the ball getting in the way of the stroke.  work on some long putts thinking this way - it is a very natural and effective way of putting, especially as you start getting good control of your speed

    good luck!

  8. Chris,

I have been told this and it has helped me out a bunch.  If you are standing straight up with your putter out in front of you, try to connect your elbows to your sides.  This almost acts as an anchor.  Once this is done bend at the waist until the putter is flat on the ground.  If you putter does not touch the ground extend it until the point it does touch the ground.  Instead of putting with your arms and hands, try to use your core muscles and rotate.  This does take a little getting used to, but after a small window of trying, your putting should improve.  Another item to look at would be loft of the putter.  Some experts believe in 4 to 6 degrees of loft on putters.  Other experts believe in 0 degrees of loft.  I changed my loft to 0 on a scotty and have been rolling the ball GREAT.

One last bit of advise is with putting don't hesitate to try something different if you are not putting good.

Try this, it has really improved my putting,

Thanks Brad, I will try that tonight. I'm sure it will feel different. I am going to get fit for a new Scotty, but not for a few weeks. I'm always willing to try something different if it will lower the score! Thanks again.

Try the gate drill and if that doesn't work you should consider finding a new putter

  11. Had an obvious fix pointed out to me by a teaching pro. Keep still!

Do not use use your lower body. Keep your legs from twisting or moving. Keep your head over the ball until after you hit. Do not lift it.

As a drill count "one" after you hit he ball and then look for it.

Judy Rankin recommends keeping your hands ahead of the ball so my ball is slightly back in my stance.

I also ake a very unorthodox stance. I open my whole body and I try to keep my heels as close together as possible. ( I don't recommend the open stance. I use so that I can see the line out of the side of my eyes.)

    So:

    1. Keep still.

    2. Keep your hands ahead of the ball.

    3. There are two basic putting strokes (mostly).tIf you have a natural, pendulum stroke then use it but if your natural stroke is an arc where you het the ball at the center of the arc then keep it if it feels good. (Think of a door opening and closing. That is the club path. )
