Well, I had the same problem, and what I had to do was refine my set up, posture, eye location and most importantly, my stroke. Now, what I do is set my feet shoulder length apart, with the ball on the line that my inside left foot makes straight out. Then make sure eyes are on top of the ball then I use a straight back stroke with entire arms wrist and shoulders moving at the same pace.

I found that the last tip is key to speed, as any wrist action or any part of stroke moving faster than the rest of it kills speed control.

you could try to figure out the tips I attempted to explain, or do what I did and experimented for a couple days on the practice green with different putting techniques.

  3. Hello Padraic,

You say you miss short putts so get on the practice green and find yourself a straight putt about 3 feet to the hole, Go through your normal putting routine. Then, close your eyes and stroke the putt with your eyes closed. Listen to hear if the ball drops. At first, it might feel really weird (it did for me) but you will develop a feel for the speed. After you get comfortable putting 3 footers with your eyes closed, move back another 3 feet and practice 6 footers. I've done this for years and I vary this drill practicing 9, 12, and 15 foot lengths (there's usually too many people on the practice green for me to try longer ones).

    Good luck.

    Hi Padraic,

Here's a quick drill I like to use from time-to-time on the practice green.

Basically, you have to make two putts in a row from the same distance before moving back away from the hole. I start with 1-footers, then go to 2-footers, then 3-footers, then 6-footers, then 10-footers and end with 15-footers.

Again, I only increase the distance after making two consecutive putts.

    Good luck on the greens!

I recently started playing 2 putt par on the practice green. I use 3 balls and start from a longer distance. The goal is to two putt each of the 3. When you focus on making sure you leave yourself a tap in, the 3 putts go away. Once you dial in, you can focus more on dropping the first.

  7. I practice by playing "9" holes on the practice green using only one ball. I need to have no more than a 2 putt on any hole, or I have to start the game over. This really helped me get my speed down to where I usually have pretty close and makable second putts!

i tried the first two suggestions tonight at the practice green.  Both were good drills.  I will try Blain A's tomorrow night.  Thanks for the suggestions.  Its always good to keep it fresh.

I will put 5 or six balls near the green and imagine i am laying two.  I chip as close as i can and try to one putt to make par.

If i am not chipping and just doing putting drills i will imagine i am making a birdie putt for each new ball i putt.  If i miss it i try to sink the par putt.  I am trying to imagine good situations when i am practicing so i feel comfortable with them on the course and don't put any undue pressure on myself while playing.

I find that adjusting my pre-shot routine has been helpful to nail down the correct speed.  Here is what I do; after I read my putt for break, I set up to make 2-3 practice strokes before I actually stroke the putt.  The key is that I am staring (focusing) directly at my target while I am making my practice strokes.  I then quickly step up to the ball and hit the putt.   I find it is okay to be fairly deliberate in reading the break,  but once I get into my process of making my practice strokes and then hitting the actual putt, I don't spend too much time standing over the ball so I retain that short term muscle memory.  Hope this helps!
