So I've been playing some good afterwork rounds at a course with some pretty lush and thick rough.  My biggest issue is when I miss a green or a fairway, I can't predict if my ball will be a flyer or not.  I felt like George Constanza- every instinct I had was wrong.

I've always been under the impression of:  if you can see more than 2/3 of the ball, and/or it's sitting up, it'll fly.  Other than not missing greens and fairways, what can I do to better predict if my ball will be a flyer or not?

are your results for different types of shots inconsistent?

Not really.  I get the occasional chunk, but for the most part my trajectory and contact is consistent.  I played nearly all of my golf in Colorado to this point, and the rough in Massachusetts is much different.  It's shorter grass, but it's really thick.  Flyers were much easier to predict back in CO.

Now it seems like I guess that my ball will fly, but it doesn't.  Next shot with the same looking lie I guess it won't fly and it all of a sudden it's sailing.  I know there's golfers on this forum from all over the place, and I'm hoping someone has a tip to predict what lies will fly and what lies will act like a normal (a little less distance and less spin) rough lie.

Playing golf in other places really puts into perspective just how good the Touring pros are.

The most important factor when considering a flyer is the direction the grass is growing.  If you are going with the grain the ball is most likely going to jump, if the grass is growing against the direction you are going it will come out soft.  Good luck!

Good call.  This tip really helped.  I hadn't even thought of grain.  Thanks again!

Chris has the best answer. A tip could be to play it a bit back in the stance with a shorter iron and not take a full rip at it (except if it's wet)
