    Hi TT,

I am looking for any and all advice to help my putting game.  I had eight 3-putts in my round yesterday, which isn't typical of me, but it was absolutely awful.  I am so frustrated right now, I am hoping some of you guys can give me any and all advice.

I usually read the greens pretty well, but it is my distance control that gets me in trouble.  I am not looking to shoot 27 putts/round, I am just looking for ways to get rid of those costly 3-putts and be a better overall putter.

Homey, buy Phil the Thrills DVD.  It not only gives you hella good pointers for putting, it will give you amazing insight to the short game.  I watched it and found it really helpful

If you are having trouble with speed try this. Putt a ball anywhere on the green you want, then putt another one from the same spot and get it as close as you can to the first, then another. Then do it again to a different spot. try to get the groupings closer and closer as you go. This is what I do when I am having problems with distance control. Good luck!

I hear your frustration! The thing I work most for control is keeping the left wrist firm & flat with soft hands, then concentrated on the back of the left hand down the line. This sensation can also be felt by practicing with your glove on and placing a flat builders pencil (home depot) in your glove from nuckles to well above wrist, then just allow the putter to flo freely.  Once this feeling is achieved i practice a standard scale of 1" back stroke per 1' length of put up to 10' length, equal lengths back & thru and I will adjust my tempo depending on the different green speeds of the course im playing that day for my feel, adding for uphill - deduct downhill.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  Also  reccomend getting a Professional putter fitting am 5'10" and I use a Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2 putter - 33.5" length - 70* lie (1* flat) -  20 gram weights (360 gram head) - Cameron grip built up with 3 layers of tape is MY optimal putter specs. I noticed great improvement having a putter that fits me perfectly and feels comfortable in my hands and during my stroke. Now I am actually trying to make putts from 30' and in, instead of lagging!

I start out my pre-round putting on the practice green with 6- footers out to 10-footers. Usually 3 balls per spot and will not move until all 3 have been holed from that spot. The last part of pre-round putting is distance control. 3 balls again starting from 15 feet and out to 30 footers. Once you have this down to 3 feet and in on your second putts the 3 putts will subside. I've found this to heave help tremendously with distance control and feel.

    Hope this helps.

I have also been struggling lately with my putting over the last two rounds, and it has ballooned my scores out of the 80s into the low 90s.  What I have found is that it takes a tremendous amount of experimenting with stance, ball position and grip, to get it just right for yourself - then a tremendous amount of practice.  So, figure out the grip, stance and posture that helps you sink the most putts - it could be a standard reverse overlap, cross-handed, ten finger, etc - as many golfers as there are in the word, there are that many putting styles.  I played with a guy recently who had zero technique, and apparently no concern whether or not he made any of his putts, and he was knocking them in from all over.  So you have to find what works for you!

The fitting, the DVD and other things will certainly help, but ultimately it's up to you.

Good luck to both of us!

Hi Corey. i've been reading up a lot lately about putting practises used by the pro's and the one thing that they all keep coming back to is making sure that your eyes are over the ball at address. The best possible way to do this is with a putting mirror that has a line staight through the middle. you simply find a dead straight 8ft putt and line the mirror up so that it is pointing directly to the centre of the hole then fasten it into the groung using 3 teepegs. The front 2 teepegs also act as a gate to ensure that tou strike the ball out of the centre of the putter. Then you just stand over the putt and ensure that your eyes stay on line with the mirror's line throughout the stroke. I couldn't believe how far out my eyes were. Anyway 30 mins of this a week is all that's needed. Mine cost me about £20 so $30 i guess. The pro at our course saw me using it and said that on his pro's course they used cd's that they had cut in half so that's a cheaper option i suppose. either way as with all golf shots the set up is the foundation of a sound stroke so i suppose it deffinately won't hurt. Good luck. Mike

Check out my article at www.golfinfuzion.com titled "tick tock" for better distance control.
  10. 1. Get a putting rutine!!!

    2. Go into every putt relaxed

    3. In your head think that you are going to make every putt you walk up to, or go into your put knowing that your going to make. Its usually confidence for me. If I miss a short putt it takes me time to get confidence going to redeem myself and start draining putts.

    Hope this helps.

Corey, the way I eleminated three putts is using the practice green like a course. I would putt two or three balls from one hole to another working my way to holes of various distances apart from each other. It's one more tool for the box that may help.
