Why so high?

I've always hit a high ball. It's great to be able to hoist a 4 higher way up high and still get it to travel 200 yards, but it makes life tough in the wind or if I happen to put some side spin on the ball. What I'm trying to understand is how I hit so high, and how can I get it lower?

At first, I thought it was that I was not having forward shaft lean, and my swing speed was making up for it (118mph w/driver, 96mph with 6 iron). However, I tried one of those Tour Striker irons, and I was still hitting nice high balls. FYI, the Tour Striker is setup such that it is not possible to get the ball in the air unless your hands lead the club head. It's really humbling if you cast your club.

I've been fitted for my last two sets of irons, so I don't think spin is the issue. My current set:

    MB 710, +1", +1°, DG S300 hard stepped 1. I'm 6'5".

With 6 iron: 96mph swing, around 6000rpm spin, 20-23° launch.

Handicap has been down to 9. I'm a little higher now due to small children, but it's coming back down.

    Thanks for any info.

It could be the shafts that you play. Different shafts can cause higher or lower ball flight.

Regarding shafts, I tried a DG X100, but launch angle wasn't any different. I lost about 20 yards of carry though.

I will try another set of videos. Maybe I can spot something.

I know your pain. I have had the same problem. but I have learned that on windy days to put the ball back in my stance alittle more than normal and swing easy with a club up on every shot. Yes i lose yards on every club but my shots are lower and more control able. (and i try to hit cut draws into the wind)

I would try having your local pro bend the irons to 1 or 2 degrees more stronger. It will surely bring the ball flight down.  I have the Mp-63 irons with dgs300s with 1 degree flat and 2 degrees strong and they work great for my high ball flight.

I thought of that, but since I already have lots of distance, I was concerned about my short game. My 9 is already good for close to 150. 2° stronger will push that almost another club. No? Did you also bend your wedges 2 degrees stronger? If not, I would expect quite a gap.

Dave, check your divots. Do you take deep, and digging divots or do you sweep the ground? Sweeping the ground would indicate a shallow angle of attack. The opposite for deep divots, too steep.

I learned to play golf on a local course that didn't water much. As a result, deep divots were dangerous to your health and clubs. I put myself in the middle. I do take divots, but they are rarely deep. Also, depending on the ball, I almost always leave the ball behind the ball mark with anything from a 8 on up.

    Brian,

I am a sweeper because that was how I was taught to play the game.

I know that taking a divot would increase my distance, but It also puts my out of control on my shots.

Any ideas on how to handle this?

    Thanks,

    Louis

For DUFFER a simple way to try to stop sweeping is to practice on the range some 3/4 shots with 70-80% of your weight on your forward foot. this will naturaly incline your body to make a steeper swing. once you begain to feel more comfortable with your ball contact at this point then you can to back to a normal weight transfer at 100% of your normal swing tempo and you should naturaly have adjusted to where your impact is more of a 60-40 or 70-30 weight distribution at impact which in turn will have created a steeper swing path. but make it a gradual transition and expect some bad shot early in this transistion it will not be an over night thing and your shot trajectory and spin will change. I would only suggest this change if your un happy with being a sweeper. if your a single digit handicap. dont change your swing. This is assuming your an older gentalman and have been playing the game awhile.

I have that problems sometimes also. What I do is swing smooth and easy. It lowers my ball flight down tremendously. You just might have to take an extra club, but its worth it! good luck.
