Hey Team Titleist, Do any of you have some good tips for hitting driver into the wind? I've been kinda working on punch driver type shot that goes about 230 yds into a strong headwind but it's a little inconsistent (pulls mostly). I've also been thinking about playing a punch 3 wood into the wind. Does anyone have experience with that? Any thoughts are appreciated! Jan

    Hi Jan,

Check this tip out from Butch Harmon in the My Game section. I hope this helps!

First you need to fully understand, have embedded into to your brain, and fully accept that you are going to lose distance on this shot.

Now simply relax and swing easy. With irons use a club or 2 longer, relax and swing easy.

I prefer to just use 3w off the tee into the wind(if I can reach the fairway with 3w), and hopefully my short game will save me.

What Butch Harmon is talking about is based on the fact that you do get posted on the left side. Everybody has a flat spot in the bottom of their swing, this comes from the lateral movement of the body(posting on the left side). Hitting the ball in the flat spot reduces spin, widening your stance increases the length of the flat spot. Just like short game, you want more spin, you move your feet closer together, you want the ball to roll out you widen your stance.

Careful with hitting a draw into the wind, if hit out to the right(across the wind) it may not curve back. If you hit directly into the wind the draw will be increased possibly into a big hook.

Hey Quintin, I hear what you're saying about the flat spot of the driver face. It makes sense to me. Could you go into detail as to how your stance width is correlated to spin? I'm curious as to how that works. I mean, I get what your saying about spin because I can visualize how my shots typically perform in relation to my stance width, but I'm just curious about the details of it because it sounds very logical.

I didn't say flat spot of the driver face, I said flat spot of the swing. This flat spot is mostly due to the body movement to the left side.

Imagine drawing a circle, you get to the bottom of the circle and move the center in the same direction you are drawing the circle, the arc flattens, same thing when your body posts on the left leg, you have moved the center of the arc toward the target which is the same direction you are swinging, it flattens the arc.

The tighter the arc(a penny is a tighter arc than a quarter) the more spin created.

The wider your feet, the more the body moves to post on the left side, the more the body moves the longer the flat spot in the swing, thus less spin.

It is the same thing with a wedge. When you want more spin you put your feet together, when you want it to roll out you widen your stance.

So in the wind(what Harmon said) is you widen your stance, but you have to make sure that you get posted on the left side.

I play golf in the wind and stong winds 90% op the time. the USA courses don't know wind. there is no special way. you make 2 small ajustments. 1. you T the ball lower and slightly back 1/2 a ball. 2. ensure that there is no lateral movement over the ball at impact. remember not to try and hit the ball hard. use your normal swing. the moment you start to change things such as your stance, make it wider, bend your knees more, you fundamentally change your normal set up and this will change your swing. look at the players in europe, they play wind all the time. Look at Clark, he kept the same stance and swing as always. Pro's play different shots because they can.
