  1. HI, i was wondering how far you should stand from the ball, Its kind of an easy question but I

feel like my swing is very solid but this is holding me back, also what kind of shots would you be hitting with

your irons and woods and how can you tell if your standing the correct distance from the ball? Thanks very much

There are so many factors to consider that it is impossible to say an exact distance. Every swing is different. Having said that, I would suggest that you tape the club heads and hit some balls. You will be able to see exactly where you and making contact. If you tend to be towards the toe if the club, move up slightly. Vice versa for the heel. Tape give you excellent feedback. You can also see how consistent your contact is. That might be a bigger eye opener for you than what you may think. Good luck and try the tape.

Each club has a different length. The Driver is the longest all the way down the the wedge which is the shortest in increments of clubs.

For instance take your driver and put it next to your wedge, and you'll see a big gap in length and understand.

Here's what I tell my students for how far you should stand from the ball.....

Take the club your hitting. Let's say a 7-Iron and set up to the ball.  Once set up (without moving your posture or position) drop the club when you are fully ready to hit the ball.  Let your arms dangle as lose as a goose while your doing this....if the weight of your arms moves lets your arms club closer to you, you are too far away, if your arms use gravity to move away from your body you are too close to the ball.

Let your arms dangle with no tension and let gravity take over (if you have the correct posture) your standing at the correct distance if you can almost let of the club and your arms don't move......hope this helps.

Remember Each club is different length, so you must do this for every club to get each one right.

I struggle with this from time to time as well... My approach is to position myself so that i can manage a balanced swing and maintain my body angle. In other words if i step forward or towards the ball after striking it i'm too far away, if i stand up during my follow through i was too close. I think the previous comment is right onthe money, letting your arms drop straight due to gravity should be close, pending your posture is correct.

My barometer for this is how far my hands are from my body at address. If they start to get too far , I simply pull in closer to the ball even if it does not look right to my eye. More times than not this fixes things quickly.  I think the more general sin here for casual golfers is to get too far away from the ball and then either toe it or worse yet start casting to reach it.
