  1. My first hole-in-one came on March 22, 2014.... and almost exactly 10 years later, on March 29, 2024, I dropped in my second... ON THE SAME HOLE! On a brisk Friday, I came to the short par 3, 3rd hole at Somersett Golf and Country Club. I've played this course many many times, and as we drove our cart to the tee box and the green came into view, I thought to myself "That's a Hole-in-one pin today." The hole was cut on the front tier of the long, narrow, three-tiered green about 7 paces off the right side. Attacking this pin would be made easier (and safer) playing a cut starting center green. Unfortunately, I generally play a draw and can't command a fade at the drop of a hat. I chose to play aggressive anyway. My intended start line was 7 yards right of the pin, just on the edge of the green side bunker. Planning to hit 9 iron was a subtle draw, still landing the ball right of the pin and allowing the draw spin and green slope to work the ball close to the hole. I stood in, rehearsed my shot and executed.... Perfection. I hit the shot exactly as intended. as the ball came careening back to earth, we knew the shot would be tight, but the bottom of the pin was obscured from view by a small bush. The rest of the shots were played from the group and we loaded into our carts to drive up and see what we anticipated to be a very reasonable birdie put. As the full green came into view, my playing partner said, almost in a whisper... "We're missing a ball." We parked the carts on the far side of the green and walked up to identify our balls. The moment continued to build with every step closer to the hole. "Is it in? Did it spin off the front of the green?" Step, step, step. As I began to gaze beyond the crest of the hole, time slowed. Finally, I saw it. A white sphere, marked with a navy blue line and gold initials "DD"... Nothing but the bottom of the cup.
