If one wins the Masters, his status is elevated to Legend.    It is also where both the PGA and Champions' Tour players participate.   

I have to agree with everything you just said.  I love watching the Masters, and it is by far my favorite tournament of the year.  I also envision it as heaven.  You don't see the busy streets, and houses around the course like every other tournament.  It's just cut into the trees, and is IMO, the most beautiful course out there.  I especially love when it is on Easter.  My uncle, grandpa, and cousin will all be huddled around the tv to see what happens.  Hoping for a very exciting week!

I think the Masters is special because it is the first major. Also it is played on the same course and seeps of tradition. The Masters is usually when the weather starts to get nice in the northeast and marks the beginning of golf season. 

Well put, Micheal B.  We are starting a bit late this year, right on Masters weekend, so 7:40 tee times both days will allow me to be "all in" for many hours of Jim Nantz's silky voice and Feherty's wit!

In a word- tradition. It's definitely a tournament where a win will catapult you into the record books regardless of your past or future. The course is nothing less than amazing. It's exclusivity only makes it that much more appealing in my opinion. It is also the first major of the year, so the anticipation is unparalleled. And it is also the only major that is always played at the same course. The pros also seem to like it more than any other major. The pros claw and scratch just to get an invitation. I also really like what they do for the amateurs, and the storylines are always the most dramatic. Plus the logo is just so dang cool!

It's just the best.

I had the chance to go to a practice round in 2010.  I quickly realized that Augusta National is a very special place. Everything about the course and the tournament is special.

I think that the Masters is so special because it really weeds out the good players from the bad.  If you win the Masters once, it’s probably luck.  But if you win it twice, you are obviously a superior golfer.  As most of the rest of you said, it does seep of tradition and I think that just to be able to play Augusta National would be a privilege, but to play in the Masters is a dream come true because it is where golf’s greatest players find out how good they really are.  They are either rewarded for their hard work in the Masters, or they are humbled beyond belief.  So, the real reason in my opinion why the Masters is so special is because it’s a prestigious tournament on a beautiful course that shows who is really the best golfer and who can really master their body and mind to win golf’s greatest tournament.

Also, the Masters just has that thing that someone wants.  As a 14 year old, my dream is to become the next TW or Jack because they are the best and I want to be the best.  I want to win more majors than anyone else and my first one is gonna be the Masters.  It is the most prestigious golf event you can possibly win as a professional.  My drive is knowing that if I work hard enough, I can achieve goal and become one of golf’s greats.  The Masters is a great opportunity for pros and amateurs alike to show their talent and prove themselves.  It is a tournament created by a great golfer for great golfers and is really what makes you stand out in the record books of golf.  

I agree that it comes down to the traditions... Magnolia Lane, Champions dinner, Par 3 contest, the big 3 striking the opening tee shots.  I also think it's really cool how once you win the Masters once, you are invited back each year.  Lastly I feel like the tournament is always exciting especially on the back 9 on Sunday.  Those closing holes allow for so much drama.  Looking forward to another exciting finish this year!

All great responses, so far.  Someone mentioned Jim Nance...  This is the one week per year I wish I was him.  Final 4, Championship game Monday, then off to Augusta through Sunday night.  Lucky dude.  But he is great at what he does, truly gifted voice and vocabulary. 

Christian - you hit on a point of watching with family.  The first golf I ever watched was Sunday of 1986.  No wonder I have been hooked ever since.  I watched with my dad and it was the beginning of a special bond we share.  I was 7 and couldn't turn away.

I think I actually gasped when I read "What's so special about the Masters?"...  :)

For me, it is the almost ironic combination of calm and chaos.  Having never been there, I can only relate to what I've seen and heard on TV....the first thing I take in is the calm - the birds chirping, the slight rustling of the patrons, the respectful applause, the gorgeous the azaleas, the manicured fairways, the towering pine trees - even Rae's creek and the bunkers look inviting!!

But then, after taking it all in you start to feel it...the pressure.  And then you start to see it...all the places on the golf course you don't want to be!  As you start watching players, the tension starts to build up in yourself as you wonder...are they going to make it in 2 to that par-5? or is that ball is going to roll off the front of the green?  The danger is everywhere!!  And it only gets worse as the weekend progresses...you start to wonder if your favorite player (or your fantasy golf team players!) will hold on or if Augusta National will claim another victim.  Can you feel your stomach clenching already?

But even through all the stress (and we're not even playing!) you can't help but become enveloped into the screen - it's like we're right in the gallery.  Maybe it's just me, but I swear the camera angles are totally different compared to other tournaments on TV..it's like we're sneaking inside the ropes.

As many of you have mentioned, this is my favorite week of the entire year...today isn't Thursday, it's Masters Thursday. :)  I watch the final round alone every year - no phone no conversations - it's just me and the experience, and hopefully my favorite player winning.   And I'm exhausted after it's all over!!!

I will proudly wear my new Titleist cap that I received from Cathi, and has been my tradition, I will wear my new FootJoy golf shoes in the living room.

I'm giddy and nervous at the same time!!

5-10 years down the road there may even be a female or two in the Masters given that one certain amateur already is practically the longest hitter and may compete with the men in terms of distance when she turns pro.  They're already letting a 14 year old male amateur play in the Masters this year.
