Go for the 3-iron. I've played on a links courses for over 60 years and when the wind blows you need a club to keep under it. In my younger days, my go-to club was a 2-iron but you don't see many of them around these days. A young lad who I used to play with on occasions was sponsored as an amateur and they fitted him up with a 1-iron which he used with great effect in a strong wind.

I played 9-holes yesterday and I counted the number of times I used a 3-iron and it was 7 - the most used iron in the bag.
