    Hi

I had a superb fitting with Paul Thompson in early Feb and am waiting to try the SM5's before I order my set. I was suited to AP1's ,TT DG Reg 300, ½" short 1 Deg flat or KBS Tour Stiff, regular length and 2 degrees flat (similar results). It was apparent using Trackman that I only hit down at about 1 (max 2) degrees with a 6 iron (normal is 4 o5 degrees down) and hit a high ball and struggle into the wind for distance. I wondered if I should go for 1 or 2 degrees stronger loft, as I have no trouble getting the ball in the air, but that would make the PW 43 or 42 degrees! Do many people use stronger lofts on AP1's? I am 50, played for 20 years, having lessons and play off 8 or 9 at a tough par 72 SS 73 course but I have a flattish swing, don't take divots and still don't hit down enough to compress the ball. Do I get stronger lofts or learn to hit the ball properly? - Comments welcomed

    Hi Russ.

Guessing learning to hit the ball differently after 20 years may be an issue. Why not make the irons stronger as you suggest and add in an extra wedge or 2? I got fittend at Kings Acre last november. Now carry 4-9 in a CB and 46, 50, 54 and 58 SM4 wedges. Difference from 120 yards in is staggering.

I think the way forward is to keep with standard lofts.  Just tried moving the ball back a lot further and hitting it quite sweet on a better trajectory.  I will probably end up with a similar make up to yours, probably 5 iron to  44 deg PW in AP1 plus 48, 54, 58 in SM5.  Will keep up with the lessons, but old dog new tricks is very true in this game!  Certainly enjoyed the fitting as the facts are there for you to see.

    Cheers

    Russ
