There are two courses at the St Pierre, the Old Course and the Mathern, I played the Old Course earlier this month and its a great course with some tricky holes and in great condition. I've only played the Mathern once but was pleasantly surprised, it's not in the same league as the Old Course but well worth a punt if you're looking for a extra game. I agree the Rolls of Monmouth is a great course, Ross on Wye isn't too far away and is a tight, tree lined course and really enjoyable. The Celtic Manor has three courses but I'd choose the Roman Rd or the 2010 (if you can afford it!) as the best of their offerings, all within a few miles of St Pierre

I recommend looking through the Top 100 lists and ticking them off one by one. Maybe start with the courses on The Open rota? The cost to play them is increasing all the time so don't delay if possible. I've played 6 of the rota and found them to be some of the friendliest courses to visit. Another great option is the European Amateur Golf Tour, which is sponsored by Titleist. Anyone can join and they play many of the best courses in UK&I, Europe and the US.
