I had a question about shafts in wedges and would appreciate your opinion. If I bought new wedges should I go ahead and get them with Dynamic Gold X100 which is what is in my irons? And if you play the same shaft in your irons and wedges, what are your pros and cons of this? Thanks for your opinion!
  2. You should get fitted so you'll have wedges that best fit your game and the results you're looking for.

There are a lot of people, including pro's, who do keep the same flex/shaft throughout their whole set. Consistent feel, results (mid launch/mid spin, etc.). 99% of the time, you don't take a full swing with your wedges, so, a stiffer shaft will give you some control.

Around the greens, when chipping, lobs, etc., sometimes, too stiff of a shaft won't give you the spin that you may need.

  3. I use the subject WEDGES Shaft, instead of make a new one, i wiil like to know what is available according to your update 2014 custom option, for the FST company on KBS model for wedges

    KBS Hi-Rev (Wedges) Std/Up-charge R, S, X 115, 125, 135 2.0˚ - 1.8˚ Mid
    KBS Tour Black Nickel (Wedges) Std/Up-charge R, S, X 110, 120, 130 2.1˚ - 1.9˚ Low/Mid

Is it true that the black nickel is discontinued, if yes what will be the equivalent ?

    Thanks

A few years ago I put x100's im my wedges to match my irons and found that I lost a lot of feel with shorter shots around the green. Also rememeber you rarely swing your wedges full bore like you would your normal irons. Since then I have went to the kbs c-taper x-flex in my irons and went with the c-taper s+ in my wedges. I really like the feel of this a lot more especially around the greens.

Most players prefer a softer flex in their wedges. Usually you are hitting less than full shots. Wedge hosels  are longer and do play softer even with the same flex. I' d try s-400 . A second option many use is to put X100 8 iron shafts in your wedges. That soft steps them one club as DG shafts the 9/PW are the same shafts

    hope that helps

  6. Ok, so this is a great discussion point and in a recent fitting with Bob Vokey we talked about this with my wedges.  I reference Bob only from the standpoint if there is a great resource on this topic he would know... that being said, we discussed as a central point which wedges were for full shots and which were primarily for half shots...if I had any wedges that were primarily for full swings then my normal shaft would be used (DGx100 in my case) however any wedge where I primarily used for partial shots we used softer flexes (DGS400 in this case for me).  This is the reason that Dynamic Gold Tour Issue only makes two flexes generally X100 and S400 since better players only use these two flexes plus they can be hard or soft stepped to fine tune personal preferences and swing characteristics.  Hope this helps Great Question!

Chris 92009 I appreciate your sharing that with us. I have been working on that premise wondering myself and glad you shared. I swing Project X 6.5 in my Titieist 710 MBs and I use the PW of that. I am using the S300 in my TVD 54 M and TVD60 M and love it and the feel, wheras i was worried about wedge behaviour and the wrong flight and spin with Xs in my wedges.

On a monitor It seems that the S300s are the best and my wedge game I feel in my experience is solid with wedges a bit softer and better feel for scoring. A good fit for full and partials.

    Hope this also helps.

    Cheers TT!

Hi James - I have to second Chris on this one.  I play x100's in my irons and actually play a s200 in my 55 and 60 degree Vokey wedges.  I have tried a lot of different setups in the wedges and found that the s200 gives me the best feel on the touch shots.  My setup was also confirmed when I was fit by Mr. Vokey last year.  He indicated that it is quite common to have a softer shaft in your wedges as these are more feel shots and not full swing shots.  Everybody's game is different and you need to find what fits your game.  Sounds like the x100/s300 combo is working so I would stick with it!

My personal set of irons has changed to KBS they are stiff soft stepped. My wedge shafts I pull and put in new heads as they wear out grooves. My SW is the only non titleist club in the bag. I bought 5 cleve 588 SW 's the raw kind that rust. In that club I have a Satin PX 5.5 8 iron shaft. Probably made more birdies because of that club than my Scotty.  My Lob wedge is a Vokey SM4. 58.09 with a rifle spinner 4.5 shaft. No longer made buy I have a few that I put in when that wedge needed to be replaced. Prior to that I had a 60V Vokey given to me by a tour pro that he custom ground to have zero bounce. The 58.09 I went to after I had no choice because the 60 V gad no grooves left. My Gap wedge is a Vokey TVD 50 R Grind with " MAGIC STIK" stamped on it. In that I have a rifle 5.5 9 iron shaft.

    My point is 2 fold.

    1. Feel and the confidence it brings is paramount in your scoring clubs . Never change a winning game.

    2. Bounce on your wedge set up is as important as loft. The cleve has a lot of bounce the others less. This allows for a variety of shots from different lies. It's easy to  deloft a wedge and hit it at a different effective loft. This decreases the bounce too. Higher bounce invokes more spin. My favorite shot is the low flying SW that one hop stops. Those shots are never full swing and the feel of the shot is accentuated by a softer shaft

I agree with the rest. You should get fitted for what is best with your game. I had my wedges with the same shaft as my irons, and it has worked well for years. I don't swing as stiff a shaft as many though going with a Project X 5.5. It has worked well for me now as well as in the past, going back to my old "illegal" "mac daddy" grooves, before I switched over to Vokeys and did the same thing there too. Works for me, but maybe not as much if you're swinging something much stiffer.
  11. I liked hearing James confirmation that being fitted to measure your spin rate etc. is valuable... while softer flex for many works for your wedges however Nicholas you may wish to be fit on a trackman device to confirm that this is the best for your game.  JAT

Chris and Mike I can't tell you how valuable it is to hear you both share the details that come from the "man" himself on this. Its kinda puts speculation on what Vokey thinks  to rest so I can game what I know he would say.

Also I can't say enough about how important getting on a trackman or flightscope is with your wedges. We hit 1/2, 3/4 and full wedges and I was amazed at what we saw. On the partial wedges, side spin was an issue for me. So while getting the right shafts in there, the monitor not only helped, but in a softer shaft we had to drop the lie angle a bit and "perfect!" went from high side spin to even hitting a few with all back spin and zero side spin!  (on the monitor lol)

That for me alone was a real blessing because I always had tendency for wedges to only spin left, whereas with the right shaft and 1/2 swings on a monitor helped sort that out to square.

The 1/2 and 3/4 swings on a monitor will revela tons for your scoring shots.

Thanks again guys for such an active forum. Makes spring that much closer, Thanks all for sharing everyones ideas and formulas. Appreciated.

Wow, this is a great discussion and proves to me that I'm on the right track.

For players like myself, [an old guy that uses R flex Graphite shafts in their irons], it sure is difficult to find any OEM that has wedges with R flex shafts. Even when customizing the available shafts in R flex are still in the 125 - 130 gram range which I find still to  heavy to get any type of feel.

I believe I found the shaft that would work for me in my wedges. The KBS Tour 90 shaft, which weighs 95 grams in R flex. Can I customize / order the new SM5 wedges with that shaft?

I believe you should go with whatever works better. Some people prefer to play the same shaft they play in their irons in their wedges, some like less stiffness in wedges, some people's wedges have stiffer shafts then their irons.

I was fitted for my irons and wedges by my local club pro.  i don't recall using a trackman or equivalent during the iron fitting.  We ordered all the clubs 2 degrees upright and the same shaft for all of my irons and wedges:  AP@ 712 5-W, Vokey SM4 54-08 and 58-06.  I am using the Dynalyte Gold XP R300s throughout and am quite please with the results.

  16.  I agree...go with whatever you feel comfortable with....maybe you could order two wedges, one with a standard shaft as your set and another with a weaker flex and see which you prefer...might be a couple extra bucks but if no shortcuts is your approach this might be the best... JAT
