    Hi everyone,

I just bought a new AP2 iron set (PW-4 iron) and i am really happy about it. I als ordered the new titleist woods, but i haven't bought new wedges yet because i want the new SM5 wedges. I have room for three wedges in my bag. The question is: which lofts? Many people suggested the classical 52-56-60 set-up, but i'm not so sure about it.

First of all, i really like a 58° wedge for some reason, but i also like the 52°. I am thinking about buying 50°-54°-58°, which also sounds good because the ap2 pitching wedge is quite strong at 46°. So I don't have a big gap between PW and gap wedge if I take 50°.

Last question, which grinds should i take? I really don't understand those grinds. I rarely play very firm courses, in Belgium courses are often wet (it rains a lot here). I like to have some bounce on the sand wedge (54 or 56°), something like 11-12°, and about 7° on the lob and gap wedge.

Any kind of advice would be appreciated!

    Thomas

I've sort of veered away from the traditional setup.

I have AP1 irons and use the Vokey 48-06 (bent to 47*) in place of the PW. My SW and LW are 54-11 and 60-10 both 1* strong.   I also have a 64-07 but use it once in a blue moon.

    I played SM c-c 50-08, 54-11 (bent to 55) , 60-07 and 64-07 up until 2012.

The courses in San Diego CA vary wildly and conditions vary on the SAME course even.  The municipal courses have hard turf and greens.  Some of the more upscale courses (like Torrey Pines, Riverwalk and Oaks North) have much plusher fairways and soft bunkers.  The wedge setups I have had work well in most conditions.  One of the military courses have rather rock hard bunkers.

Hi Thomas - I have the AP2 712s and got fit for my SM4 wedges outdoors with a launch monitor.  What we found was that a 52 bent to 51 and a 56 bent to 55 kept consistent yardage gaps with the 712 AP2 8-9-PW (I believe the 712 PW is 47 degrees).  I then filled out the set with a 64 because I'm "that guy".  I went with low bounces because I tend to play firm (cheap) courses.

If you can find an affordable fitter I cannot recommend it enough.  I had got my entire bag fit at Pine Meadow in Mundelein, IL (they are an advanced fitter for Titleist).  They set up outdoors, grass range, with a launch monitor and the fitting is free so long as you buy the clubs from them.  Plus, they match any other major supplier's price on the clubs.  I realize that with you being in Belgium that doesn't help much but if you can find someone local who doesn't charge an arm and a leg it's worth it.

    thanks for answering!

I think your wedge set-up is really good for you, you don't have big yardage gaps, but i think it wouldn't work well for me, as i don't need a 64 degree lob wedge, and i play wet courses. In Belgium there aren't any titleist fitters i think...

I think i'm gonna go with PW(iron set)-50-54-58. I'm gonna wait until the SM5's come out, should be soon.

But i still don't know a lot about the grinds, why is it so difficult nowadays...

    Scroll down this page:

There's a "bounce and grind" matrix as well as a description of each kind of grind, explaining which would be best for different swing types and turf conditions.

    Hope this helps!

    hi tom

I to like a 58 lob and have 12 deg. bounce I use it for chipping and out of the sand, works well in wet and dry conditions,

my 54 has 8 deg. I use it for chipping and approach shots, were I play in the spring its wet so more bounce is better,

in the summer and fall it tends to be dry so less bounce is better so find the right bounce for your conditions and always get fitted the right club fit makes a world for difference hope this will help.
