I am planning to swap from a SM56.10 to a 58 degree this year. I was planning to buy a 58.08 with M grind, but now I have convinced myself that I need a little more bounce. I read where the SM4 was made in 58.12 M, but the new SM5 will only be made as 58.08 M.  I already have the 46* SM4 so saving on last years model is an option, but I hate to buy new wedges and not get the latest version. Is there going to be a SM5 58.12 M, should I just buy the SM4 or get the 58.08 M and practice a little more?

We will be offering the 58.08 M grind as well as the new 58.11 K grind.  If you are looking for a little more bounce, the K grind might be a good option for you.  All of our Advanced Fitters as well as our Tech Reps will have a full bag of every wedge.  RTJ Oxmoor Valley in Birmingham will have them and we are conducting Fitting events in Alabama - http://www.titleist.com/events/

I play in pretty firm conditions, always packed sand and hard fairways.  I believe I can get away with the 58.08 M, which I had planned on getting.  Then I read an article where most don't play enough bounce.  My miss is "fat" if anything.  I'm not sure the K grind would work well for our conditions.  I am starting to like the idea of the SM4 58.12 M because I can get it ordered now instead of waiting three more weeks, but the SM5 just keeps whispering my name, ha ha!

The 58-12 M grind is actually a very high bounce on the leading edge.  I briefly tried the Spin Milled c-c version about 3 years ago based on my success with a 258-12  (which had a full grind sole).  Absolutely fab out of soft sand.  Had to adapt digging shots on turf.  The 54-14 actually picked the ball better.

I have been using SM4 54-11 and 60-10 (both bent 1* strong) since 2012 and the bounce is ideal for wide varieties of conditions (both are M grind).  The 60-10 works in both hard and soft sand very well and I can play tight lies if I put the ball back a little (matter of fact, it is easier to pick the ball with it vs a 64-07).

Hi David,  Sight unseen, the new SM5 58.08M or S sounds like it would work just fine.  Difference is how you like to play your wedges through the turf.  The S is more forgiving and you can hit it off the back trailing edge. It works in firm, medium and even soft turf.  If you watch Steve Stricker hit his short shots, he tends to hit them squarely.  This wedge grind was developed for him.  On the M grind, you can lay it open and hit flop shots so for a sweeper that likes to play a variety of shots, this is a good choice. It works on firm and medium turf.  On the SM4 58.11M grind, due to the trailing edge relief on the sole, it does play with slightly less bounce.  The K grind might be a little tricky off of very tight fairways with firm turf.  I would go to your local Advanced fitter and see if you can find one with both the SM4 and SM5's.  They are in the middle of transitioning out of the SM4's as they receive their SM5 wedges so some of the fitters will still have both wedges.

    Hi David,

I went through a lot of these same mental gymnastics when trying to figure out which version of the SM5 58 to get.  I had been using the spin milled 58-08 with the M grind, which I liked, but as a driver/digger, I figured I'd give the 58-11 K grind a shot.  Everything I've read is that attack angle should dictate bounce more than playing conditions. If Adam Scott could use a K grind to win the Masters, Vokey must have figured out a way to get some more bounce and sole width on a wedge that would be playable even in firm and fast conditions.  I'm interested to see into how my experiment turns out, but I'm confident that I made the right call.

Im a big time sweeper of the ball, never take huge divots.  Never gotten fitted for any wedges before. Been having hard time hitting shots from 50-75 yards this year with my SM4 60-07.  Went to a range to work on just that this past saturday, and by fluke titleist fitting day was there.  Took a bunch of wedges to try them out, and NOTHING came close to 58K grind.  Without trying it, i would have never even gave it a chance due to the sole/bounce on it and my swing type.  Easiest wedge i've ever hit and it was confirmed on trackman.  Launch was lower and more spinning.  Instantly bought one and tried it out the next day when it was very hot and very dry, and the bounce was only helping me in these situations, i didnt have to be that exact in picking the ball clean i was able to cheat a little and still results were amazing.

I truly believe amateurs dont play enough bounce, EVEN when sweeping the ball off the turf.  I just think its too hard to pick it clean with no bounce.
