    Hello TT,

I recently made the switch from R11 irons to 712 AP2's. I love the AP2's, the only problem is they came without a gap wedge that is leaving an awkward distance gap in my bag.

I'm looking at getting a 52 degree SM5 to fill the gap, but I was curious to know what you guys thought would be the best sole grind for this type of usage.

Any help here would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Brenden,

    Thanks for your question.

Both the 52.08 and 52.12 come with the F grind; a full sole grind designed for full shots.  The only question is do you need high or low bounce?  If you dig the ball and mis it fat, I would lean towards the 52.12. If you tend to pick the ball or play in firm conditions, you may want to lead towards the 52.08.

It is always best to see a local Titleist fitter, but hopefully this gives you some direction.

    Take care,

    Bubba

    Bubba,

Thanks for the quick response! That certainly solves that problem, but now I have another question.

In an effort to retain the gaps in my current wedges, I'm probably going to be bending the wedge to 51 degrees. Would you recommend bending a 52 weak 1 degree, or bending a 50 degree strong 1 degree? Also, what will bending the club do to the bounce? I'm probably looking at the low bounce option as I have a tendency to come out of the shot and catch the ball a little thin.

It is a one for one relationship between loft and bounce, so bending your wedges 1* strong will reduce the bounce by 1* and weakening will have the opposite impact on the bounce.

As an alternate option, they did make a gap wedge for the 712 AP2s.  Titleist no longer carries this model new since the 714's are out but I bet you could find one online somewhere to match the rest of your set.

Mike, I appreciate the tip. I'll have to keep an eye out for the gap wedge! Thanks, -B

I have 712 AP2s, and I got fit for both the irons and the wedges.  For my setup the fitter and I went with a 52 degree SM4 bent one degree strong to 51 degrees.  Good luck!

Weak is increasing the loft (50-51). Strong is decreasing (52-51).  When you bend strong, you lower the bounce.

    Hi Brenden,

Lou is correct.  When the loft of a club is strengthened, the effective bounce is reduced.  Vice versa for when the loft of a club is weakened.  For example, if you were to bend a 52.08 to 51 degrees, the effective bounce would now be 7. If you require less bounce, I would suggest bending the 52.08 to 51. This will reduce the effective bounce to 7 degrees.

    Hope this helps!

I played with a SM c-c 50-08 bent to 51 3 years ago when I still had my Eye 2 irons.  Was great for long bunker shots and good around the greens; when I went to AP1, I bent it to 49 - not great but not horrible.  Also experimented with an SM4 52-12 bent to 51 and 60-10 bent to 59; the latter was good out of greenside bunkers and the former was OK for long bunker shots out of soft sand and general pitching but not so good off tight sand.  My current combo is SM4 48-06, 54-11 (bent to 53), 58-06, 64-07; sort of a reversion to my 2009 wedge makeup (still toying with whether to keep the set wedge, the 48 or both; set wedge is better for full golf shots and goes 5-10 yards farther than the 48 but pitch shots are literally inches different and the 48 is better around the greens).

I have both sets of 714 AP's, 1's and 2's with SM4 oil can wedges. I generally use my AP2's most of the time. But to help out on your question as for gapping of your wedges. I always try to keep a 4 degree gap between my PW thru LW. So if you have the AP2's, then the PW is at 46 degrees, so to maintain that 4 degree variance, my GW is 50.8, SW is 54.8 and my LW is 58.6. My C.C. is firm and fast so I too have to maintain low bounce. So if you stay this route you are maintaining a proper wedge gapping to cover all your shot needs. The AP2's I bought after the AP2"s just out of curiousity for distance and forgiveness, but now they just sit in my garage not being used after about 8 rounds on them.
