Why is it that when a "What’s in the bag" segment is shown, most of the tour guys are removing their PW from their set and replacing it with a 47* degree wedge?  Is this a trend that most low handicap amateurs should pay close attention to?  Just curious what everybody else is thinking or doing in regards to this topic.

    Hi Chris,

    Thanks for your question.

On tour there is about a 50/50 split between players using Vokey wedges as their PW and using the set wedge.  In general, the Spin Milled wedge will spin more and is more versatile for chipping whereas the set PW is more commonly used to fill gaps in the lower half of the bag; however, this is all player dependent.

Hope this helps and thank you for your continued support of Team Titleist.

I have both in the bag since I have enough room.  Personally, the AP1 PW does better on full swing shots and the SM4 48 is better around the greens because it stops the ball better.  I'm doing a bit of side by side.

Like Bubba said, it is a matter of personal preference.  For player irons (such as DCI 981, 755, 735CM, CB and MB), they do ok around the greens and off tight lies but you have to play the roll in the shot.  For me, an AP1 PW works well off grassy lies and most full shots and some soft sand.  The 48 works better on the bump n run shots.

Before I switched to AP1 irons, I had Eye 2 and used a SM c-c 50-08 in place of the set wedge mainly because it worked better off tight lies and around the greens.

What I did was set the lofts to stock (45 for PW and 48 for 48-06) and was hitting shots at the park.  The difference in full swing shots was 5-10 yards consistent (may be attributed to roll).  With pitch shots, it was a max of a couple yards but literally inches in a couple cases.  The 48 stops the ball better.  I would venture to say that a "player" (i.e., AP2, CB or MB) set wedge may be a close call and I would go with the Vokey.  I've played rounds with DCI, 735CM, 755 PW and they were great around the greens but lost a little on distance vs AP1 PW.   In my bag, the 9 iron and PWs are 35.5".

When Vokey came out with the 246 about 18 months ago, I went with it and dropped my AP1 PW.  The Vokey 48 wouldn't go far enough so I couldn't do this until the 46 came out.  It matches up great with my 250 and 256 so the distance gaps are very consistent on full shots and easier to bump and run.

Hey thanks to all on your comments, this dicussion has really given me a lot to think about.  I went out the other day and found that I have a 30yd gap between my 9i and my set PW.  I also have a 15yd gap between the PW and my 54* Vokey.  I think I will try to get a 46* Vokey and a 50* Vokey sothat I can close these gaps up a bit.  I also like the idea of chipping with the 46* vokey rather than my set PW.

I added a Vokey 46, 08 and dropped my Chevron brand PW in my last set.

I liked my Vokeys so much that I upgraded my irons to Titleist. My new AP2s PW has a consistent gap with my short irons so I use it now. I generally chip and pitch with my GW.  The shafts are different between my Irons and Wedges.

I recently just took out my stock pitching wedge and added a 47 degree sm4. I find that it is easier to chip with and that I have better shot making control and distance control. with the right shaft I found that the distance is about the same but I had gained a lot of control.

I found the gap between my 9 and AP1 PW was too close but my 48.08 was too big.  The new SM5 46.08 has been perfect!  Find a used wedge and tinker with what you like and then order a new one with all your custom specs!
