    Hello,

I just bought the SM5 - M grind 54 and 58 degree wedges and before I use them, i am having second thoughts because I am a 15 handicap who plays in all kinds of weather conditions being from Toronto, Ontario, Canada. I did some research but never hit the SM5 and I learned that the M grind is the most versatile wedge, which is why I chose them.

I would say I am more of a digger but I only take large divots when I slow down the swing when I am not confident about the shot. The bottom line is that I want the most versatile but also the most FORGIVING wedge between the M grind and the S grind. I checked out the vokey site and I still couldn't get the answer I am looking for.

What I mean by versatile is that I want to use the wedge comfortably out of bunkers and I want to use the 54 degree on full shots from 80 to 100 yards out and the 58 degree from 50 - 75 yards on full shots and then I want to pitch and chip with the 58.

What is the most forgiving club in the sand and on full shots the M grind or the S grind and why?

I appreciate any insight that anyone can provide.

Hi,  The M grind is the most versatile because it allows you to open up the wedge due to the amount of trailing edge relief.  You can hit flop shots as well as square the club to hit chip shots.  The M grind is the most used grind on Tour due to its versatility.

If you are looking at the two wedges and want the most forgiving, the S grind will be the most forgiving.  It is a wedge that works well when you square the head at impact.  It has a fuller sole than the M.  If you watch Steve Stricker hit his wedge shots, he squares and roatates through the shot.  He, Bill Haas and Scott Stallings use this grind.

Both grinds can be used in the sand as well as with chip shots, but selection will depend on your technique at impact and personal preference.

You may even want to consider using the S for your 54 and the M for the 58 to provide you with the versatility of both.  We do have some very good fitters in Canada and we would recommend that you contact our Canada office to get their fitter recommendations in your area.    877.928.8898

    Hi PN_ND

I live just west of Toronto and would highly recommend going to

see Chris Welton at Eagle's Nest in Maple. It is the Titleist National

Fitting Centre. You can book appt's online. Nearly everyone I know

on TT goes there. Lorie Kane from the LPGA was there yesterday

being fitted for new wedges. I went to see Chris a few weeks ago

    for a wedge fitting. I ended up with SM5's 50.08F,54.10M and a

58.07S, all 1 deg weak in Raw Black. Chris will take you through

a 1 hour session hitting all kinds of shots around the green as well

as in the bunker. My old wedges were all TVD's with the M grind but

let me tell you the S grind out of the bunker was incredible. So now

from 130 yds and in I've got all my gaps covered. Hope this helps.

                       Cheers Dave T.
