I just recently replaced both SM (52.08 and 58.08) wedges with SM4's (52.08 and 58.12). I have now realized that I should have stayed with the 8 degree bounce on my 58. looking at the new SM5's compared to the old SM's it looks like the SM's have more heel relief. My course has become firmer and I think I have too much bounce on my 58. Should I go with the S of M grind? I think I am leaning towards the M but something in my gut says S.

    Hi Greg,

It is always best to try both wedges out in similar course conditions. With that said, the M grind is designed more for individuals who like to open the club face to hit different types of short game shots. The S grind is designed more for individuals who like to hit short game shots with more of a square club face.

Think about this when looking for your new wedge. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

    Take care,

@Bubba - my 58-06 has L grind......  seems to work pretty well in many conditions (I can hit it out of soft sand, hard sand, tight lies and grassy lies).  What kind of player is L grind meant for?  Also have a 64-07 that has T grind - seems like it has more bounce than what is advertised; it is rarely used but I do so primarily for short bunker shots out of deep ones or 50 yard full swings and 30 yard pitches where the ball has to stop dead (I'm still learning more shots with the 58-06 still and there are times when opening the blade of it is better than square face with 64).

@Greg....  I tried SM c-c 58-12 quite some time ago, thinking it was like my 258-12  and I really did not like it (had to adopt a digging style on the turf - fabulous in soft sand).  I carried a 60-10 (bent 1* strong) for 2 years before switching to the 58-06 (what triggered that was the winter rains made the bunkers like concrete and); it had M grind and one thing I loved it for was greenside bunker shots but also had to adopt a digging style in hard sand and tight lies.   I absolutely love the 58-06 as a good all around wedge.  My main thing in my short game has been finding the ideal lob wedge and I believe that the the 58 is IT .

My 54-11 (bent 1* strong) has M grind on it.   I've gotten pretty deadly with it.  Not the world's greatest off tight lies.

    Hey Lou,

The L grind is designed more for a slider and individual who plays on firmer conditions. However, this is all player dependent. Sounds like it has worked pretty well for you over the years.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for your replies. I need a good all around wedge so I'm going to try the 58.08 M grind.

You'll probably like that.  I had a 60-10 that I bent 1* strong (making it 59-09). It also was M grind.  I could play a lot of shots with it. What I do like about a 58 is that I play the small amount of roll.

I think what has happened to me is I have tended more towards being a slider but am a shotmaker (can change to slider or digger as the needs dictate); however, I have trained myself to use a 50-08 and 58-06 in soft sand.  I've been using the 50-08 and the 58-06 off tight lies for pitching.  I've been using the PW, 54-11 and 64-07 off softer lies.  I take a divot on my full swing shots, so I fare better with the PW, 54 and 64.

    Bubba,

That's good to know about the grinds.  I have very limited access to trying wedges, so as I try to decide what to get, all the extra info I find is great.  This is the first I had heard about the different grinds for different styles.
