    Hi,

hope Team Titleist and others can give me some assistance. I'm a 1 handicaper and today I play 4 Plz wedges with Rifle Spinner shafts. My shortest wedge have a 4.5 flex shaft and the shafts get stiffer as the loft decreases. I really like the soft "feel" of these shafts on shorter shots but they seem to be a little tricky on full wedge shots in that I sometimes hit my wedges much-much longer than their average distance. I should also say that I like somewhat heavy wedges with a low penetraiting ball flight like my current Plz wedges.

    Now my cry for help:
I'm about to purchase 3 Titleist SM5 wedges (50F, 56M and 62T) and I would very much like to get some help on finding a suitable shaft. Like I said, I like a soft feeling shaft with a strong ball flight, but I would also like a stable shaft ... In my current irons I play Project X shafts with 5.5 flex (even though the club fitting session told me that I could play 6.0, but I seem to like softer shafts).

Any ideas on a suitable shaft for my SM5 wedges?

Would the standard Project X steel shaft work on wedges?

Should I go for one of those spinner/hi-rev shafts in the Titleist custom shafts list, will they give me a softer feel but still stay stable?

    Best regards,
    Marcus

    Hi Marcus,

    Thanks for the question.

When it comes to finding the right wedge shaft, there are many thoughts. Some people like to play the same shafts found in their irons, while others like something with a little more feel. As a fitter, I usually encouraged individuals to keep the same shaft and specs in their GW as their irons (although, this was not always the case). This is because the GW is mainly used for full shots, and you want it to perform like a long iron.

From there, most individuals looked for a shaft with more feel in their higher lofted wedges. If you are currently playing the PX 5.5 in your irons, try the stock S200 wedge shaft or even a PXi 5.5. These shafts will feel a little softer but should still give you control when you want to hit full shots.

As always, this is player dependent and I would suggest trying to see a local fitter, but hopefully this points you in the right direction.

Please let us know if you have any further questions.

  3. Bubba, great points as always!  FWIW, I play DGTI X100 in my irons and DGTI S400 in my wedges (56 and 60).  Everyone has a different feel on this subject as discussed but this seems to be common among the players in my region.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for your input guys, very helpful!

Any thoughts on the spinner / hi-rev shafts out there, are they as unstable on full shots as some think?

For some reason I didn't think the stock S200 would be something to consider, but now I sure will. I fear that the PXi shaft might be too light for my liking.

    Regards,
    Marcus

  5. The spinner and hi rev shafts seem novel but I have found the traditional approach is best for my game with the DGTI S400.  My irons are DGTI X100, thus if you set up on a trackman machine you can determine if you need more spin or if your shots require more or less spin the decsion will be easier to make...enjoy the journey and seek out great Titleist Fitters to see which is best for you!

I run Project x 6.0 in all of my irons and wedges and love it. I like the same thickness off the the grip in all of my clubs is probably why I like the Project x shafts in my wedges.
