Looking for a new set of wedges.  I have a question about the Oil Can finish on the SM5's.  I understand the Oil Can rusts over time, but is there a way to either expedite the process or strip the finish entirely to a raw finish?

Back in the day I had a couple of 588's with the raw finish and I loved the rusted look and was hoping to get that with the new guys.

    Thanks.

The SM5 doesn't come in the Oil Can.  The Raw Black would be the finish you would be looking for.  I haven't tried it, but others seem to have luck by dunking them in a bucket of soda.  I would assume the more moisture they are exposed to, the quicker they will rust.

You could try soaking them in a glass of Coke overnight. I know previously with another manufactures wedges that this would work.

I currently have a 48 Vokey with the Oil Can finish.  I sped up the rusting process by wrapping the wedge in a cold damp towel overnight when storing away.  After a few treatments (3-4), I ended up with a well rusted look.  They will develop rust over time on their own, but wrapping in a damp towel will certainly speed up that process.

I have the SM4 Oil Can wedges, I used vinegar to rust them. I put them in a plastic container and filled it to the furrels with vinegar left them overnight (10-12 hrs) and in the morning they were completely raw, then left them outside overnight the next night (got them wet before) and they were rusted the next morning. Even wrap them in a wet towel and rust will grow...

Don't know if the SM5 comes in OIl Can, only see it in the gold nickel, unless you can get oil can through the vokey shop...

LMK if you need anything else.....

    Hope this Helps,

    Jack,

There is no Oil Can finish in the SM5.  The closest to that finish would be the Raw Black.  This is a stained finish, like the Oil Can, and will begin to rust.  We don't have any best practices to help take that finish off, as we would not want you to buff it out and damage the wedge.  Keep in mind the Gold Nickel in the SM5 is a plated finish and should not rust like the Raw Black.

Thanks guys.  I just saw the gold nickel color on the website and assumed it was Oil Can.  Am I ever glad I asked.
