Advice on Wedges for the Pacific Northwest Golfer?

  1. Happy to finally get rid of the CG15's in the bag and make the move over to the Vokey Wedges. As a golfer in the Pacific Northwest I'm having some issues determining the appropriate bounce and grind that will work best for me and the conditions I play in. My CG 15's were low bounce and purchased when I lived in sunny San Diego not really geared towards the PNW.

I sit at a 16 handicap and am not overly talented with my wedges around the greens, conditions I play in are typically softer fairways and packed sand bunkers (not to much of that nice soft fluffy stuff). I have a 50 degree PW in the bag and was looking at adding Vokey wedges in 54.11 and 58.08. My thinking is the 54.11 with the higher bounce will help get me out of the softer fairways and the 58.08 lower bounce will allow me to cut through the packed sand and taller wet grass around the greens. As far as grinds go I really have no idea, I'm leaning more towards the S grind for both wedges at the moment.

    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Hi James,

    Thank you for the post.

You are correct in thinking that higher bounce would be more ideal in softer conditions; However, this can be player dependent. Some individuals are sweepers/pickers and require lower bounce in all conditions. I would suggest taking note of your mis-hits. If your miss tends to be fat, lean towards more bounce.

As for the M Vs. S grind, that depends on the way you play short game shots. If you like to open the face, I would suggest the M. If you like to hit short game shots with a more square face, the S grind would likely be more ideal.

As always, it is best to see a local fitter and try the different options.

    Keep us up to date.

  3. Great, thank you for the solid advice and knowledge. I look forward to getting down to the local fitter and swinging a few Vokey wedges.

I too live in the NW--Central Washington-- I have just purchased a Vokey 58/11 S grind that I find helps me with the predominantly firmer surfaces I see here.  I am a 16 HCP and hover between 16-18 depending on the courses I play on. I also have a 64/10, and 52/10 as well as a 56/11 M. I ususally carry at least 2 often 3 wedges when I play.

Second the advice to find a fitter, but don't assume just because you are in the NW all ground is soggy. West of the mountains is going to get rain. If you are near Spokane, you have firm conditions, then snow. Same thing for central Oregon. The Vokeys are definitely a step up from the CG's.
  6. You mean it does not rain every day in Seattle? I do occasionally get over the mountains and play as well, played Apple Tree Resort last weekend (great facility). I will eventually look at adding additional wedges to the lineup for firmer conditions. Thanks for the advice.
