For anyone who has done this, please chime in an give me your experience(s).

I need to free up a spot in the bag and the only way for me to do it is to change my current wedge setup.  Currently I'm playing 714 AP2 1° strong; P (45°), AP2 W (49°), Vokey 54° and Vokey 60°.  My intent is to either purchase a Vokey 48° to replace the AP2 P&W or just drop the AP2 P and just use the AP2 W.

The AP2 P & W are very close for me in terms of distance (125 for the W and 132 for the P) so I can do it but I was wondering how versatile the Vokey 48° would be vs the AP2 W and I also wondered how the distance would compare.  I do like the AP2 W and find myself using it quite often but rarely do I ever use the P.

    Thanks...

    Thanks for the post.

First off, it is all about yardage gapping when making up a wedge set. After you try the Vokey 48, you find that the gaps are ideal, you have your answer. One thing to consider is your 9i. If you 9i is also 1 strong, you will likely see a significant distance gap between it and the Vokey 48.

It's also important to consider playability. The Vokey 48 is more playable around the greens, however, the AP2 PW is likely better for full shots and individuals that need a little forgiveness.

My best suggestion would be to try both clubs and see which one will help you in the scoring zone.

    Hope this helps.

Thank you for the reply Bubba...

Good observation on the 9 iron as my whole set is 1° strong (I have 12 yards gapping between numbers other than the P and W).  I think it may work okay because my standard distance for the 9-iron is 140 with + or - 10 yards if needed.  If the Vokey 48° can cover 125 comfortably then it should work out well as my 54° covers 110 comfortably and I'll have 15 yards gapping between them.

One last question.  Should the shaft in the 48° be KBS Tour S to match my AP2s or KBS Hi Rev to match my other Vokeys?  What are the pros and cons of one vs the other?

Assuming you will be using the 48 PW primarily for full shots, I would strongly suggest sticking with the KBS Tour (S) and matching the rest of your irons. The KBS High Rev would likely produce too much spin on full shots with a 48, especially with an SM5. While this is my suggestion, I would recommend trying both if you have the chance.

    Thanks.

Your ? about shaft,   My Titleist fitter was pretty specific about matching my Vokey to the rest of my AP1's to the point of not taking the standard of the rack model he had in stock, but ordering it to match the rest of my sticks including the grip.

I read somewhere else (I think on this site, the exact same response),  make them match.

I also have the 2 additional wedges from the AP1 series, and he thought about replacing one with a vokey, but to Bubba's point ,  The AP1 gives me that forgiveness on the full shots.

Myself I changes the clubs in the bag depending on the course that I play that day.  On days where the layout is narrow or hilly  , I change the 913 H for a Long Iron as I'm comfortable hitting them also.

I recently did a similar change.  Went from 46, 52, 56, and 60 to 48, 52, and 58.  It freed me up to put my 4 iron back in the bag.  I found that by choking down on the 9 iron and opening the face on the 52 and 58 when in gaps works very nicely.  I still feel more comfortable hitting a 4 iron to short par four/tight fairways than a hybrid.  Nice post...

Thanks again Bubba and thanks for chiming in with experiences Mike & Mike... :-) The 4-iron and possibly the 3-iron will be going back into the bag, that's my reasoning for a different wedge setup. The courses I am playing more frequently have become quite demanding on the longer-end of my bag. In addition, I've grown quite tired of carrying 4 wedges as it seems to restrict the creativity in my game because in my mind each wedge has it's own purpose and if that purpose isn't needed then that club doesn't get used, seems sort-of a waste. I'm going to order the KBS Tour S for my 48° Vokey. I reference to an earlier post by Bubba, I may strengthen it by 1° to 47° to offset a potential gap issue between the 9-iron. Should I have the shaft on the Vokey soft-stepped once? My current set is KBS Tour S straight in...

I would not soft step the shaft. I would ask for a Std. installation.

    Hit it well!
