I want to see what the new AP1 and AP2 irons look like this fall and then decide on either or a mixed set. I have plenty of time till then, yet have always been confused on the gap wedge. Even the pitching wedge. I see the AP1s have 2 gws an AP2 has 1(if they indeed are gws). Can I use a Vokey as my gap? Same question for the pw. Would there be any advantage of disadvantage by doing this, or would it simply be personal preferance? Is the reason the gap and pitching wedges are part of the iron sets? Yet most players clubs do not have a GW. Thanks

    Hi Edmund,

    Thanks for the post.

You can certainly use your Vokey as a GW. The primary reason a golfer chooses either a Vokey PW or GW Vs. a "set" PW or GW is performance characteristics. Vokey PW's and GW's tend to offer a little more versatility, especially around the green. However, AP1, AP2, CB or MB PW's have different CG's and tend to be more forgiving and fit the gaps at the bottom of the bag better.

The short answer is that it is personal preference. Understanding what you need in a wedge is the first step.

    Hope this helps.

How do you plan to use your gap wedge?  Will it be almost always full shots from the fairway?  Will it be a lot of chips and pitches from around the green?  The set gap wedge is going to be more forgiving and easier to hit on full shots.  It'll play just like your PW, just a little shorter.  The Vokey wedges will be less forgiving on full shots, but more versatile for pitching and chipping.  I've been looking at the AP1s and AP2s for my next set, so I would guess we are comparable in golf skill.  I decided to go with a Vokey GW.  I don't hit it as far as I would a set GW, but I find it much easier to use around the greens.

    Edmund,

For myself when I got my 714 AP1s, I chose to get both the gap wedges. My reasoning  (that's what I love about this game) is that with the 2 gaps I'm able to hit a variety of full shots with them to some lesser yardages. My wife bought me a Vokey SW and a Lob wedge for my birthday/Christmas.. I use those around the greens but also the gaps for more run out on chips and such.

This gives me some full shots at way less than 100yds. Personal preference. Really like my Gap Wedges..

Thanks for all your replies. Interesting. I do use my GW full shots from the fairway. I use my SW and LW around the green, yet actually full shots my SW depending how far out I am. I will practice more around the green this season, before I purchase new irons and wedges. I will also see if my fitter then can help me with my decision re the GW.
