Are there any differences between stock pitching wedges from iron sets and Vokey wedges with PW lofts? I think it's something that really only concerns better players since clearly you lose forgiveness if you make the switch. Do you lose distance? Is it purely for feel?

Just going off the numbers it looks like the Vokey Wedge has 1* more bounce than the 2014 irons. That would mean that the sole is going to be just a tad different. Also, the grooves are going to be vastly different as well since they have the spin milling. These differences will probably make the Vokey more versatile in less than perfect situations.

As for feel and distance, they do feel a bit harder since they are cast and not forged. I don't think the distance shouldn't change as long as the other fitting factors are the same.

I've read that if you often find yourself opening and shutting the PW face a lot and/or use less than a full swing, the Vokey might be a good way to go.

Patrick, very good question.  The PW choice, in my humble opinion, is very personal.  Do you like the feel and look of the iron set you're purchasing, or does the Vokey PW option better suit your eye, feel and game.  I just had this discussion on the course today with the guy I was playing with.  It always comes down to you.  I love the four wedge system.  The Titleist AP2 PW and the three Vokeys on top of that make me feel like a champion.  Do what makes you feel great and you will be.  Good luck!  Vern

I use a Vokey for the feel.  I almost never use a PW for full swings, so I have better feel and control on partial shots and actual pitches.  It's ultimately a personal choice.  I have a 48 bent to 47 and did get it shafted with my iron shaft to hedge my bet.  Others prefer getting even the GW in their iron heads as well.

I made the switch because the Vokey 48 has better feel and playability. I found once I made the switch that I get more distance because of a better ball flight while also getting more spin. At the end of the day, try it and see what you like better.

Good question -thanks for posting this! As was stated above, the grooves are different and the bounce can be as well, depending on what you are comparing. Personally, I view the PW as a "scoring club" meaning that I try to get the ball as close to the target as possible so that it makes for an easier putt. Because of that, I like the Vokey over the standard stock wedge because it gives me a little more feel, control, and spin. I do give up some distance though - my 46 degree Vokey with 8 degrees of bounce is noticeably shorter (about 5-6 yds) than my AP2 PW (which is also 46 degrees but with 7 degrees of bounce). Has anyone else experienced a distance drop off with their Vokeys?

I'd recommend going to the range and testing the stock PW and Vokey side by side. You'll be able to see how each club affects distance, forgiveness, feel, control, and consistency. It's all about what you prefer and what will help you score. Everyone is different. Good luck!

I also go with a Vokey 46 instead of my traditional PW. I decided it that way because it's a wedge and all other wedges are Vokeys. I'm not able to say if it's better or not. As already said it's a personal decision. Buy a Vokey PW and test it out!

You don't say what clubs you are playing,

Not being a very good player, I use the AP1 wedges, and then have a Vokey 56/11 shafted and gripped same as my other AP1's that fills out my bag for sand and other short approaches.   I like the forgiveness the AP1 offer me in my approach shots and I have seen where it makes a huge difference for me.

That being said, While I still open the face on the AP1's when needed, the Vokey has tremendous ability to stop the ball on the green with its spin.   Plays great out of the sand and has great feel whe needed.

  9. Them 48 vokey isnt forged, that sensation you get with AP2 is missing. I stick to using the AP2 Pw but I do admit without the vokey groove your ball wont bite the green, that being said, I suggest to stick to vokey 48 if you want to lower your score :P

  10. I bought a Vokey 46 with my 712 AP2 irons but didn't fit yardage wise.  Went a little shorter than mt AP2 PW.  I actually ended up buying the AP2 gap wedge too (714).  I find my distances can be controlled better.  Doesn't look as sexy, but i get mire consistent flight and control on approach shots. The feel doesn't change.

I use the AP1 PW (bent to 46).

  12. I bent my 712 AP2 irons all strong 1 degree 5-PW

I have about 10 yards diff between an AP1 bent to 46 and a Vokey 48 bent to 47. The Vokey DOES stop the ball better and is better around the greens. I tend to use my 54 and 60 more within 50 yards and I actually have a couple go to shots with the 60 at 65 yards and 55 yards. I have quite an array of shots with the AP1 PW between 50 yards and 115. I can also hit a long bunker shot out of soft sand. I may consider a Vokey 46 in the future - would probably set the length to 35.5 and match the 9 iron lie angle.

I have played both the ap2 and vokey 48 bent to 47 and for me it's a little bit of everything for me. There was something to be desired when I played the ap2 pw. For whatever reason I found myself pulling only that club in my bag. There were times when I would stand over a shot and not feel comfortable because of the look of the ap2. So I took it out and put in the F grind sm5 and I'll never go back. Looks great to me at address. It definitely spins more and gives me a little better distance control. Hit my first hole in one with it a little over a month after switching. I do also use it as another option around the green if I need the ball to come out a little lower and release, something I never felt comfortable with in the ap2. It's not all roses though, I did like the feel of the ap2 more. So I guess it depends on your goals and needs. For me, more spin, better control, more versatile, less feel. Hope that helps

I am a teaching pro, certified by both png and Titleist as a clubfitter, and I have 4 thru PW in the AP2 line. Also, I have 3 Vokey wedges because I use the Dave Pelz 4/3 system for hitting my wedges. However, with the AP2 PW, I can hit full shots or low trajectory stop and drop shots when I have plenty of green to work with. As far as using a 46 or 47 degree Vokey, you have more options to customize the club to your swing if you have, say, a steeper angle of approach or you have a shallow swing. This is what the touring pros do with the Vokey wedges by using custom heel grinds or more/less bounce angles.

I sometimes use a 46* Vokey in place of my 47* CB pitching wedge.  Differences, as mentioned, are looks, feel, forgiveness and versatility.  The vokey will spin more on partial shots but is less forgiving on full shots.  I only lose distance if I am not striking the ball well, and then I just use the CB wedge anyway (90% of the time) as I also have a Vokey 50* that I will put in play.

Good question...one that I struggled with myself .  I ended up going with 4 Vokes by telling myself that I would have similar feel on all scoring shots inside of 120 yds.    I'm happy with my choice  but I  don't think you can make a wrong decision here.

I play the AP1 714 irons....use the PW and GW from the set and added the Vokey 52 and 58 ....works very well for me

  20. There's a huge difference and I'd go for Vokey every time, the only real challenge is getting the right loft so you don't leave a big gap to your 9 iron

  22. For me the main difference between the stock PW and GW was no gaps.  The distance progression was consistent with the rest of the bag.  I'm a 2.5 handicap but i don't have the luxury of a practice area with good balls that i can work precisely distances.   I also don't get to play but a few times a month. I think having a set, for me, allows me to better dial in distances.

The other thing is the AP2 PW and GW flight just like my other irons.

If i played and practiced more i might use the Vokey for PW and GW as i have a guy locally that can bend clubs for me.  My choice is mostly functional.

A lot of great comments on this issue and the responses are really across the board. The consensus appears to be that you can go either way based upon the types of shots you like to hit with those clubs and your distance gaps. For me, I play the 714 AP2s and take the AP2 all the way down to the gap wedge. My PW is at 135 yards and my GW is at 120 yards. These clubs are generally used for full shots so I prefer the yardage gapping and setup the same as my other irons and the same feel. I go down to the Vokeys for a 55 degree and 60 degree wedge that can both be used on full or partial shots depending upon the need. I can open or close the face really easy on the Vokeys to hit any distance. The great thing about the Vokeys is that they are fully customizable to what works best for your game. I play a TVD for the 55 and an M Grind for the 60 with a little extra grind on the bottom to give a bit more bounce. I would recommend thinking about what types of shots you will use the club for and, more importantly, what looks best to your eye and gives you the most confidence. A trip to a certified Titleist fitter may also shed some light on what is best for your setup.

I hadn't given this much thought for my game until I read this post and now I'm wondering the same thing.  I would love to be able to get more control via spin with my PW which would mean I would be best suited with a Vokey.  Great post!

I don't want to give up a forged MB PW for a cast Vokey, seems like a bad trade

Currently revamping the bottom of my bag, swapping out a couple of old miz wedges and replacing them with Vokeys...finally!!!

The next step then will likely be this--replacing my 712mb PW with a Vokey of comparable specs.  In my case it's almost a necessity, as the rest of the set is fine, but the PW is showing the wear and tear that comes with being the most used club during practice.

I am in the same situation of sorting out the bottom end of my bag. Currently using AP2 wedge then up to 56 vokey and a 60 degree mis matched club. The gap between AP2 wedge and 56 degree is massive, don't know why i have put up with it for so long. Hoping for a Titleist fitting day at our club in the summer?

Hi Patrick and thanks for your post......I chose the Vokey 48 over my CB PW.  Reason? I like the extra bounce the Vokey provides as it gives me more confidence for chips and pitches. I love the way it glides under the ball while playing finesse shots. Hope that helps you.
