So wanted to know what everyone was playing these days? I have 2 sets I keep going back and forth with and while it's good to have options, I think I favor the 50, 54, and 58. I love the 58 around the greens, but I do miss the 56 out of the sand not completely comfortable with a 54 out of the sand. I was possibly thinking about adding a 55 degree wedge to have 5 degrees apart (50, 55, 60) if you can't tell I have a problem. What are people wedge sets these days? 50: miz MP-T5 50-07 54: miz MP-T5 54-12 58: Titleist Vokey SM4 58-09 52: Bridgestone J40 52-9.5 56: Titleist Vokey Spin Milled 56-11 60: Bridgestone J40 60-11.5

My old set I had a 54 and 58 only.  In December I was fitted at the Oceanside facility with SM5 wedges and was set up with 50, 56 bent to 55 and 60.  I was able to try all types of bounces and grinds.  Ultimately, it came down to talking with my fitter about the types of courses I typically play and from there I went with what he recommended.  I'm really glad I was able to have every option available to try.  If you have the chance to go to a Titleist fitting...DO IT.

  3. I agree with Greg, if you have a fitting opportunity it is worth it...!

I play MBs so I have a stock PW but I go 54 and 58 just for better gaps.  I had played 52, 56, 60 but I like to carry a 712U to hit off the tee so had to make a concession to stick with 14 clubs.

    Brian,

I carry a Vokey SM4 52, Vokey SM4 56 and Vokey SM4 60.  Since I purchased my AP2's, I can actually git rid of my 52 since I purchased a PW and GW with the set. I don't see a need for me to carry 5 wedges but if I take one out, it will be the 52.  I am pretty good with flop shots and sand so I need my 56 and 60.

I'm currently carrying Vokey Spin Milled 48, 52, 62 and a old Vokey Oil Can 56.

I have Lamkin oversized grips on them for more feel. Nothing better then a dialed in Vokey!!!

I made the switch from playing 52/56/60 vokey wedges to a 50/54/58 SM5 black nickel and I couldn't be happier. I have been deadly accurate from anything inside of 125 yards and the feel around the green is second to none. I used to play my 56 out of the sand but now with the 58 I have had even better results. At the end of the day, swing your swing and choose what feels best to you and forget what myself or anyone else has to say.

I think I favor the 50, 54, and 58, too. Titleist Vokey Spin Milled Five S bounce.

Well I have actually dropped my PW out of my AP1 set and am currently swinging a 46*, 50*, 54* and a 58*. Just starting that configuration back in Feb. and so far working out really.

Here's what I have been playing for the last two years... Really like the progression and versatility of it.

    714MB 9 iron: 45*

    SM5: 50*

    SM5 54* M grind (bent to 55*)

    SM5 60* L grind

I like the 5* gapping between those... it gives options without being too complicated!

I never thought about getting fit for wedges until the Tour Van came through last summer. Even for me, I'd probably have a different set for Arizona than for Wisconsin. Soil conditions, wetness, and typical sand texture impact it all. With 914 AP1 9I, I was fit for 48/52/56 all decreased 1 degree. My 58 Spin Milled was retained. After loft, then you need a grind to pick from. I thought the 56 would be an S, but hitting it, the M was a better choice. Ordinarily, our greens are receptive enough I can swap the 58 for another hybrid. It all depends on what best 14 clubs you can use to score better. A lot of pros only use 3 but the magical flop shot maker carries 4.
  12. What club do you consider best to drop out of a standard set when you want to add an extra wedge?...sometimes it could get difficult decide which club to leave in the car to get to the regulation 14.

Do you carry a 3W and a Hybrid? I personally dropped my hybrid and added the extra wedge because I was hitting my 3 iron just as far as the hybrid and I don't have the tendency to top the 3 iron like I did with the hybrid. My bag now stands at 915 D2 10.5 915 3fD 712 AP2's 3-PW Vokey SM5 50/54/58 each with different grinds. Scotty Cameron Studio Select Newport 2.5

    Brian,

I always go off of my pitching wedge loft and go from there, so because of that my set makeup is 52, 56, 60. Most pitching wedges these days are a 46* loft, which would push me towards 50, 54, 58. The important thing is to know your yardage gaps and to feel confident that you can fill them in.

I'm at 48,52. and 56.  I have two 60 deg. wedges that I've tried but to much degree for me for any accuracy!

Agree. 58 around the greens is the right loft, but 54 is not enough from the sand. Has anyone thought about 54, 58 and 62? That is what Tom Wishon recommends for senior players.

Being a senior I agree. I use five wedges in my bag 48,50,52,56,61. Hitting from the senior T's and being a little longer than most of my competitors I'm usually  pretty close. I have my wedges dialed in within 10 yards of each. So most of the par fours its driver then 8 or 9 iron or wedge.

SM4 46-06 and 54-11 (bent to 53) and SM5 60-04 L grind.  I originally had an AP1 PW but the 46-06 is far better for pitching.

I went back to the AP1 PW.  The 46 didn't work as well for full swing shots.   Also trying a 52-08  as an an alternate to the 54-11 (one for soft turf).

I seem to have adapted more of a slider style of wedge play within the past year.   I carried a 60-10 (bent to 59) for about 2 years before switching to a 58-06 when the rains hardened the bunkers.

Update... went back to AP1 PW. Have SM4 52-08 as alternate to 54-11.

Right now, Im going 50/54/58 but I recently picked up a set of AP1s and the Vokey website seems to suggest that I go 52/58, so Im probably going to have my 50 bent to 52.

    Works like a charm.

I'm pretty adept at working a pitching wedge (I played 3 years with a do it yourself set of irons 47PW and 55SW - between 2008-2011.

I recently went with the 48 gap wedge, replacing the AP1 714 model, 54 and 58 degree wedges. So far, its worked very well.

I have the 714 AP2's and using the gap (W) that came with the set. My old 712 AP2's had a weaker wedge so i went 52°,56°,60°.. Now i'm 50°,56°(bent 55)° and 60° bent 59°. Seems to be working fine.

Wedge gapping is always a bit confusing to many players. I recently threw out my 52 Vokey and added an AP2 Wedge that is 50 degrees. That wedge can be opened to play as a 52 and I follow it with a 56 Vokey and a 60 Vokey.

The advantage is that now I have the room to add a 915f 7 wood.

    Killer combo that makes $$$$$

  33. Last year I went to 52 and 58 SM5 to allow adding another wood. This was the first tine for Vokeys, and I am much more consistent. Most of the time around the green I use a pitching wedge if I can. This seems to be working.

My setup is all vokey 48,52,56,60 and I love it. Dead on from 125 and in with the 48 and 52 about 100 yards, 56 80 and in, 60 out of the sand flops and going over objects.
