    Hi TT,

I have been having some trouble hitting my Vokey SM5 50 and 54 degree wedges both out of the fairway and rough.  I am either hitting the ball fat (from the fairway) or coming clean underneath the ball out of the rough (both thick and standard rough), thus leaving my shots short of the green.

I am wondering if this is a case of the wrong bounce on my wedges or I need to shallow out my swing.

I haven't had any trouble with my 58 degree SM5 and I play in a variety of conditions.

    Specs are as follows:

    50 degree - 8 degrees bounce, F grind

    54 degree - 10 degrees bouce, S grind

    58 degree - 8 degrees bouce, M grind

Any help you guys can provide is much appreciated!

    Thanks

Jake, I'm not a pro by any means, but when I struggle to hit my wedges, I do a few things. But before I get into that, 8-10 degrees of bounce is pretty neutral for all types of playing conditions. I'm not familiar with the S or M grinds, as I own an F grind 52.08. The question is, have you ever had success with these wedges, or has your ball striking been bad since you first bought them?

Anyways, the first thing I do is check to see if I'm standing too close or too far from the ball. Second, I open my stance a little bit and aim slightly left of the target. Third, check to see whether the ball placement is appropriate. When I'm in the fairway, I make sure the ball is positioned either center or a little bit back in my stance (for low spinners). If you're chunking your shots, maybe it's ball placement.

I don't want to get you all screwed up, but one thing I'll say that we all know is that golf is a mental game. Hitting a golf ball off the sweet spot of the club every time is nearly impossible. The chances are more than likely that you're just slumping with them. After all, they're blades that are not nearly as forgiving as cavity backs.

Change your 54 to an M grind.

I have had an SM4 54-11 M grind (bent to 53) for 3 years now and it does a lot.

I tried an SM5 60-07 S grind.....   the best thing I did was go to a 60-04 L grind.   I had an SM4 58-06 L grind and it did pretty well.

    Thanks for all the feedback!

Lou G, do the grinds on the wedges really have that much to do with digging the ball too much or hitting it too thin?  I'm not as up to date on how the grind impacts the wedges performance vs the bounce.

If so, I would definitely consider looking at the grinds as well as the bounces because I do hit my wedges pretty well with the bounces and grinds I currently have.

    Thanks.
