Control with 54 vs 58?

Growing up, I always used just a P and SW.  For the last 30 years, it has been a png Eye-2 PW (50deg) and a png Eye-2 SW(58deg).  So, anything inside of 100 yds, I grabbed the SW and went at it.  Within the last few weeks, I have acquired a set of AP2 714's 3- PW (46) + GW (50)  and Vokey 54-08 S grind,  Vokey 58-10 M grind wedges for the recommended 4 deg gapping.

I have been to the practice green a couple of times this last week, and I feel that I have much better control from the 54.  With the 54, it feels much more like shooting a jump shot in basketball, I just aim, feel the distance, and shoot.  With the 58, I feel that the ball just slides off the top and end up short.  It seems that I will really have to give it a little more acceleration when hitting a shot.

Right now, I almost feel that the 54 will be my "go to" wedge from 100 yds in, unless I need a high flop to stop short.  How do you use your different wedges?

If you didn't get fit for your irons and wedges, I would strongly suggest doing so. Most would agree that the short game is where you score and getting wedges correct is critical. Based on your comments about your 54 and 58 degree wedges it doesn't sound like the wedge's bounce is correct for your swing. I went through a wedge fitting a couple of years ago and it proved to be one of the most valuable experiences for my game. All of my wedges feel great and the results with all are very consistent.

I'm the same way. My 54 is my main wedge inside 100. You'll need to experiment a little with the 58 from the fairway, as the bounce is more than likely different. I had to move the ball back a little in my stance, and I only go at it 3/4. I love it though! Adjusting to the 58 will pay off in the long run.

    Thanks for the comments!

I think you both make good points here.  I have not been fitted for them.  I selected the lofts based on consistent gapping from 46-50 (AP2) -54-58 (Vokey).  Then I selected the grinds based on Vokey's website for Slider/Neutral.  I have only had 2 short game practice sessions with them, and today was my second time playing with them (9 holes due to time).  I think I will keep experimenting with set up and maybe moving it back in my stance.  If that doesn't work, Looks like I'll find a place to do a wedge fitting in the spring.

It sounds like a time to get comfortable with the new wedges and a little more practice will help.

In my personal experience I had to re-examine my wedge game when I changed wedges. I was not getting the distance I was hoping for from my 58 degree wedge. Similar to your experience it felt as though the ball was striking high on the club face. After some practice and a little evaluation I realized there was a flaw with my swing mechanics.

It sounds like you may be focusing too much on distance and trying to do too much sacrificing swing mechanics and contact so I would go back to basics.

My advice is go to the range without any expectations for the distance and focus on making a good swing and good contact. Be sure your hands are leaning the shaft forward at impact (flipping the club at the bottom trying to pick the ball clean and help it in the air can lead to inconsistent contact). Work through 20 - 30 balls and get in a groove to where your making full swings still focusing on making that good contact at impact. After you go through that look at what distance your getting. After doing that exercise a time or two you may find that you've corrected your issues if not and you're still struggling then maybe a fit and/or a talk with your pga pro is what you need.

    Hi Travis,

For me, wedge selection on a shot will depend on a case by case basis, given the current lie and type of approach. I pre-set my wrists for my wedge shots, so selection is a matter of manipulating loft vs bounce ratio. I've had some funky approach shots that resulted in some terrible situations, so I have become accustomed to getting creative with all my wedges.

My 2 cents on this is you need more time with the club. If you still have the same concerns after a month or 2 then I would look for some help. I have had my 58* Vokey for 3 months now and am just feeling comfortable with it now.
