What shaft should I consider playing in the Vokey Wedges

  1. I was just fitted for a set of 716 AP1s with the Nippon 950GH R flex (5-52W).  I will be purchasing a 56* and most likely 60* Vokey Wedge and I am wondering should I change the shafts to match the shafts in the irons or keep the stock shaft which I believe is a DG S200.

I would recommend changing the shafts to match your irons so there is consistency across the set.  Make sure to get fit for the correct shafts in your wedges because the flex may be different for wedges than for your irons.

From experience... I've done both and you need to figure out which way works best for you and your game.

I use to have all wedge shafts. Then I went all matched to my iron shafts. I liked it, but I recently switched to:

    50* matched to irons

    55* wedge shaft

    60 wedge shaft

While I was at the Titleist Oceanside facility, I hit shots that I normally hit (around the green, out of the bunker) and I liked the feel and turf interaction better, so that's what I ordered.

I'm not positive whether I will stick with that on my next set, or go back to how I had it. What I don't like from the wedge shafts is more spin. I have noticed more spin on the greens that spins my ball back from where I land it with the wegde shafts. I was used to just making my ball drop and stick with the iron shaft on my 60. The wedge shaft on my 55* was by accident but I'm getting used to it.

On a full swing, I like the iron shafts better, but on short shots, the wedge shafts are easier to hit.

    Hope some of this helps.

You can do either, one isn't right or wrong it's just personal preference. Some players like having the same shaft in their wedges that they use in their irons. Other players would prefer something a little softer that may give them better feel for partial swing shots. My advice if you're unsure is for wedges that you anticipate using as a full swing club go ahead and have those wedges set up with the same shaft that is what is in your irons. For wedges that you will be taking more partial swing shots, pitches and chips go to something a little softer. In your situation only looking at 56 degree and 60 degree wedges these are most likely partial swing clubs and so something a little softer may be best.

I had this same question a couple years ago. Every pro I asked suggested that the shaft in my wedges should be a bit heavier then my irons so you want to keep ball flight down (helps with accuracy).

Earlier in 2015 I was fitted for KBS Tour S+ irons and the spin numbers on a wedge was way too high so I was fit into KBS 610 wedge shaft which helps keep the ball flight lower and keeps spin from getting to the ridiculous level.

At the end of the day it really depends on what you're wanting. If you like the flight of your irons put that shaft in your wedges. If you want to keep the wedges lower go with the wedge flex shaft.

Same as the others I would suggest to change the shaft to match the other clubs

Was also suggested when I got fit

  7. I agree with what the others have said...that you should first consider what you want to accomplish with your wedge game. If full shots and more distance are your game, matching shafts throughout would work. If you are looking for more distance control and playing a variety of shots, then think about a shaft that can accomplish those goals. This might mean a heavier shaft.

For me, I have about a 15 gram difference between my irons and wedges. I wanted a heavier shaft for feel, distance control, and ability to play a variety of shots with the wedges. From 100 yards in, I am not concerned about distance, I want to be able to control my shot. And I especially wanted the heavier shaft for sand play.

But again, consider how you want your irons to play and your wedges to perform. Then work out the best shaft combo to accomplish your desire.

Have fun finding the best shaft.

If you look at the Titleist iron shaft comparison chart, 950GH is at the top right with the highest launch and highest spin rate.  Dynamic Gold is at the bottom left, with the lowest launch and lowest spin rate.  Like others have said, you don't normally apply a full swing to your wedges, so you don't flex them as much.  That is why a lot of players who play Xstiff shafts still use the wedge shaft, which is Stiff.  In your case, its opposite.  Your wedge shafts are stiffer than your irons. I'm not sure of the weight differences between the 2 shafts, but you should get more control with the DG shaft, but probably lower launch and less spin than the 950GH shaft.

  10. I recently had the opportunity to play four rounds in Florida and was able to demo and take along with me a 56* and 60* (SM5). What I found was that I used the 56* about twice during those rounds and used the 60* more often. With the new AP1s the pitching wedge is 43*, W is 47* and the W2 is 52*. Titleist recommends a 58* for a wedge and that made sense.

I ended up ordering a Vokey 58* SM6 in a K grind with the stock shaft. I like the weight of that shaft and the fact that I felt as if the club was doing all of the work. The K grind is suppose to be forgiving and I really need of the forgiveness I can get :)

    Thanks.
  11. I had the opportunity to play four rounds in Florida and demo 56* and 60* SM5 wedges. I found myself only using the 56* twice and the 60* often. I really like the weight and feel of the stock shaft. Titlest recommends a 58* with the AP1s as the P is 43*, W is 47* and W2 id 52* which makes sense especially when I was not using the 56*.

I ended up ordering a 58* SM6 with with the K grind. This grind is suppose to be forgiving which works well for me :)
