I will be in the market soon to replace my SM4 56 deg sand wedge and need some advice regarding choosing the grind. I play a lot of golf and the bunkers here in Virginia I play on are typically filled with very heavy clay sand which are either very heavy and wet or very crusty and heavy when dry. I typically play these shots closing the club way down and come down steeply to pop the ball up and out. Does anyone know whether any of the available SM6 grinds would help with this type of lie? I am thinking that because the club is closed to square that bounce has no real effect on this shot. Any advice regarding the proper bounce, if any, for this shot would be appreciated as it will assist me in selecting the proper club to purchase.

    Thanks,

    DV

We have similar, "crusty" bunkers here at many courses in Texas. I would suggest a wedge with little bounce and a wider flange. In my case the 58.04 L-grind is the most versatile. In firm sand, it keeps the shot from coming out too "hot" and, in softer sand, just grip the club VERY open. You could also try the 56.08 M-grind. See if you can find a Titleist Demo Thursday or a demo from your home course.

I don't have a lot of sand to play in here (funny as all out fairways are sand) but I chose the S grind as I don't open the face a lot and swing steeply too
  4. The steeper the attack angle the higher the bounce you should want. I too play all my golf in Virginia and I have a 56 degree with a bounce angle of 12 on my sm6

You would need a low bounce around an 8 or 10 with a M or L grind. Those are best for medium to firm conditions.
  6. Hi, I have just been fitted for a 52 and 56 degree SM6, whilst I play in different conditions, I have a steep swing that hits down steeply on the ball digging in to the turf/sand, similar to the shot you have to play. As such the fitter recommended the F grind with a high bounce on my 56. However, would highly recommend a session with a Titleist fitter with so many options. Hope this helps.

DV - There are a couple of things that I would recommend. Go to the very top of this site and click on clubs. It will take you to a list of all the clubs under the Titleist umbrella. Click on Vokey SM6. There is a video that might be helpful and a description of all the lofts, lies, and grinds and which is recommended.

Secondly and the one I recommend most. Go see a fitter.

My pro tells me that less bounce works well in those types of conditions. I have two for that reason. A SM5 56.08 S Grind and a SM6 56.14 F Grind and then sometime I will use a PW to get out. You have to use your imagination.

A sand wedge is one of your money clubs and you want to ensure that it fits YOU. We all are different, so please consider a fitter. With respect. Chuck.

I needed to replace my SM 4 60 degree 6 bounce. I wound up with the SM6 M grind 60 degree with 8 bounce. I highly suggest you go to a demo day and try th different grinds available for the loft you're interested in. The shape of the M grind is so different from my old lob wedge that I an having to change my shots to allow for th sole difference. Years ago the public had 1 grind, not 6 to pick from. Good luck.
