Looking in to getting a gap wedge and I am wondering what the average gap should between wedges for a mid handicap player.

It does not necessarily have to do with your handicap. I has to do with what yardage you want out of your wedges and how many you want to carry. My 716 AP1 PW 43*, W 47*, SM6 51.9*, SM6 56.14*.

Before I went with the W wedge I had a 50.10, which game me the 7* and 6* gaps. With that addition, I now have the 4*, and 5*.

Go see a fitter, then go see a pro who can help you with your distances and practice. Go will be a lot more fun if you do and that handicap will come down.

    Andy,

Four degree wedge gaping is very common among golfers of all handicaps.

With PW at 43-45 degrees, the old 52-56-60 leaves a gap to the gap wedge. Besides degree gaps, it is also how you use them - full shots or mostly for pitches/chips? Then getting into soil and bunker conditions for the grind. I got fit as well with AP1s, and have P-48F-54S (set to 53) and a 58-8. Graphite matching the AP1s, and NP-95 steel for the 53/58 since I use the last 2 for partial swings and like the feel. I never thought fitting of wedges mattered, but it does.

  9. There is some good information on this site especially in the SM6 section which give some good suggestions. 4 degrees should give you a gap of around 12 yards with 6 degrees being closer to 18. You need to find out what loft your wedge is, then you can select what is possible. if you struggle with distance control go 4 degrees, you may need 2 clubs to fill the gap to do this.
