Vokey PW or match iron set?

  1. I've played Vokey Spin Milled wedges for about 12 years for gap, sand, and lob wedges but have been thinking of swapping my pitching wedge to a spin milled as well. I've always just used a pitching wedge that matches my iron set because I've been worried about losing distance by hitting it higher because of increased spin. I've never had a big problem getting spin with my PW but know that with a Vokey I'd get more. The only reason I've thought about changing is that I love how Vokey's feel. Also, I'm about to get a new set of irons and if I'm going to swap to a Vokey PW then I just won't but a PW with my new irons.

Anybody used a Vokey Spin Milled for a PW? What are your thought on the change?

    Matt D,
    what a great question.
I am asking myself the same!
if anyone has done the step, i will be interested to hear why and the result on the course.
    Thanks,
    Michael
  3. I think you also need to look at your 9 iron as well. Titleist 9 irons vary from 38 deg through to 43 deg. The lowest vokey is 46 deg, so if you use AP1's you will have a 8 deg gap and a 7 deg gap if you went for the new AP3's. Just something to think about.

    Jeff,

I'm leaning towards the AP2's or CB's, which have a PW of 46° and 47° respectively, so there would be a Vokey that would fit in for me and not leave to big of a gap from 9 iron. I'm just wondering if people that have made the swap to a Vokey PW have seen significant performance differences. I'm wondering if I would get to much spin, losing distance.

  6. Hi Matt,

With AP2's or CB's having higher lofted wedges, and hence 9 irons, that gives you a bit more flexibility in your choice of wedges. I haven't changed away from a PW and probably won't, I'd dropping my hybrid out for an extra wedge when I get my new set. That said, I'm looking at AP3's and the PW is 43 deg.

I've seen a lot of people post here who have done what you are thinking about doing and they have pretty much all said that they get a lot more spin. I would suspect that a 46 deg Vokey will stop quicker and spin more than an AP2 46 deg wedge. Ap2's have a 42 deg 9 iron so you could even push out to a 48 wedge, but this probably depends on your other wedges. If you carry a 54 and 60 then this would make sense, but if they are 52 and 58 then maybe not.

I'd be interested to hear what you end up going for. I'm currently leaning toawrds AP3's (PW 43 deg) and 48.08F, 54.10S (or V) and my existing 60.04.
  7. I just added a Vokey 46 to the bag, and during the first round, it performed great. If you use your PW for full shots, the majority of the time you may want to stick w/ the set. I flight the ball low on approaches in, and more 3/4 shots w/ my wedges. You'd have to check numbers on a monitor to see what the variance would be on the shots you tend to use the club for most.

It's a personal decision. I'm currently in the AP1 crowd, and my 10 iron is labeled P. My W is a Vokey 48 set to 47. I much prefer the feel with the Vokey. As the AP1s have decreased in loft, I've had to adjust the wedges to match gaps. If I used the AP2/CB, I might not use the P of the irons. In general, the Vokey will be higher, shorter, and with more spin than the P or W it is replacing.

I tried this a couple of years ago. Tried a Vokey 46 degree vs my AP2 PW. The Vokey swing weight is d3 and the same length and loft as the AP2. My AP2 swing weight is d1. Net result for me was less distance with the Vokey so it did not make it to the bag.

You will definitely lose distance because of the extra spin..I have 48° F grind and I'm lucky to get 125yds with a full swing. But with that being said unless I'm in a bunker I use from 125yds all the way to fringe area around the green...Hitem straight. Madgolfer...

    I am currently playing Titleist 990 B irons, carrying 4-9, + P. (9 = 44.5, P = 47)
I have older Vokeys (50, 54, 58), that I am Replacing with SM6 46, 50-08, 54 V + 58 Low Bounce K - Project X LZ Shaft in each. Expecting the 4 wedge order to arrive at the store in a few days. I went this way because I really only use the P like a 10 iron, while I know that I will use the 46 around greens, like I do with my 50, when I want less loft.
Future plans include either 718 CB or AP2 (4-9 irons).
    Hope this helps.
    Paul
