Highest lofted wedge / yardage gaps

  1. Just got my set of AP3 clubs. I opted for the gap wedge (PW is 43° and gap wedge is 48°). My prior set had a 45° PW and I had a 50°, 54°, and 58° vokeys (various grinds / bounces over the years). I typically use the 54° for most of my short game shots except bunker and flop shots when I use the 58°. I open the face on the 54° for shots from 95 yards and in and rarely hit a full shot with the 58°.

With the AP3 gap wedge, I have room for only two vokey wedges. I hit the AP3 gap wedge 5-10 yards farther than my previous set creating a gap in yardage.

Wedges are due for replacement so will be ordering two SM7s, but having difficulty finalizing the lofts. I am currently thinking a 52° and either a 56° or 58°. I think I could get away with using the 56° for bunker shots and chip / pitch shots that need significant height. If I get the 58°, I am not sure what I will hit from 70 yards and in as I would have to hit less than a half swing.

Looking for any thoughts / suggestions.

With your whole set having stronger lofts, you may now have no gap between your longest iron and your fairway woods/hybrid. You might opt to take out the longest iron and keep 3 wedges if that's where most of your shots are being played.
  3. I actually went to the Titleist Performance Institute to get fit for the irons / hybrids so feel comfortable with the other 11 clubs in the bag at this point. My prior set had two hybrids with little gap in yardage so very conscious of that issue.

Dale, I couldn't agree more. I ended up taking out a hybrid and keeping the 3 wedges. IMO it worked out best for me. Great recommendation.

I would hold off on your purchase until you can get a proper wedge gap fitting. It really does make a difference!
  6. Got the rest of the setup after spending an hour at the Titleist Performance Institute, but did not have the time (or the stamina) for another hour to get fit for the wedges. It is a bit of a drive from my house in the Los Angeles area and with slots for only two wedges I am thinking I can work this out on my own. If worse comes to worse, I can swap out wedges within the 90-day return policies at most of the retailers.
  7. I suppose if you went to a wedge fitting or even a titleist thursday event your problem would be sorted in half an hour.

I have similar setup. I went with a 54 & 60 sm6. You could also bend 1 degree so you keep a 5 degree gaping. I thought about doing that, but happy with what I have.

I have the same issue and went with the 54 and 60 SM7. I went with the high bounce 54 and low bounce 60 so I’ll be able to handle any lie.

I am at the same crossroads. I have finally been able to go out and play for a couple of rounds. I'm looking at strengthening my 54 to 53 and adding a 58 to my set makeup.

im thinking about buying the ap3 but why would i need two pitching wedges 43-48. i might have them change the lofts.
  12. I am in the same boat with my PW 43* and GAP at 48*. I opted for a Vokey SM7 54* M grind and 58* S grind. So far I have only played 3 rounds but have been very happy with the set up so far

Like some of the others have said, i'd get a gapping done and see how big a difference you have between you AP3 PW and your other wedges. Is the gap wedge an AP3 too?

Depending on how far you hit the ball/length of home course and the length of pitch shots you leave yourself, you may or may not have got yourself wedges that are too strong/need different lofted Vokeys.
  14. I would go for a wedge fitting if I were you, it is always the best idea in my opinion.

Similar issue but I found as my new 4 iron was significantly longer I took out my 3 wood (which I didn't like using anyway) and went to a 16 degree hybrid. That way I could go with the 3 SM7 at the scoring end of the bag. On my fitting it worked out 52F, 56S, 60D suited for what I wanted.
  16. I am also in a similar boat now. I purchased AP1 716 and now have a 43* pw, 47*GW. I have a 52* sm6 F grind and am not sure what to do from there. I have a 58* sm6 S grind and am wondering if this would work for my sand/lob wedge. Or, if I should go another route.
