So, I decided I need to change things up with my wedge set up and what was missing was a 52 degree wedge. My other wedges are SM4's-48, 56 & 60 while my alternate set is SM5 54 and 58 degrees, s grind. Off to the golf shop I go to try wedges. The shop had a big selection of the new SM7's at $ 149.00 and a fair amount of the SM6's for $ 119.00. Not a big difference and I had a 20 buck off coupon to use as well. So I kept an open mind. I would say that the numbers between the two models were virtually identical. The felt the same, the bounce was the same, as was the grind. (8 degrees and f grind) The only difference was cosmetic. So, my question is this, if you were in my shoes, would you get the SM7 because its the latest or the SM6 because its cheaper-assuming that your numbers were identical as mine were. Curious to hear your responses. Cheers!

  2. It's not important to have the latest model for me but when I got fitted recently there was only sm7's available. I'm not going to throw them away when the sm8's come out just because.

The real question is will the SM7 lower your scores (handicap) more than the SM6?

Nope, hitting more shots on the green and getting more distance on my drives will lower my handicap. Ha ha

There is no rule that says you have to have 4* of spacing or use the latest wedges. You could bend the SM4 56 to 54 and that gives a spacing of 48-54-60. Sometimes less is more. Unless the grooves are shot....

You can also get demo or slightly used SM6s for considerably less than $119 (they go for about $69 with decent grooves).

    My wedge setup is RM21 42* ( 9 iron replacement), SM6 50-08 (49*) and 60-12K (57*), Callie MD3 64/8. 50-58-64 had been a pretty consistent loft setup for PW-SW-LW.

Update: bent SM6 50-08 to 48* and sand wedge is SM7 56-08M. So my wedge setup is 42-48-56-64 for lofts.

I just added the SM7 58-12D as a high bounce sand/lob wedge. I LIKE IT. I'm keeping the 56 at standard loft because I have an even set of gaps if I go to my Sunday bag (48-56-64).
  8. I think it all comes down to feel which is very personal, and how comfortable and confident you feel with that wedge in your hand. Have had the older Vokey, SM5 and now SM6 wedges and I found a distinct difference in feel from the SM5 to 6, and even within the 6 range, again a different feel from the chrome to the jet black finish wedges. Definitely give them a try and get fitted as the choices on the grinds will ultimately depend on your swing shape and the type of course/turf and bunkers you play on and out of the most. Currently in my bag: SM6 48.08F, SM6 58.08M. The SM6 60.12K is a bunker monster that I'll put in if I'm playing at a course with deep soft sand. And , oh yes, the SM7's are tempting!

If money wasnt an issue then yes id like the new hotness, but in real world, as long as my grooves are tight and sharpe im good, basically 1 maybe two years they get replaced when needed.
  10. I'm swinging all SM5s and when I upgrade I wont be afraid to look for the clubs on want used. I'm just not at a spot where I can go spend on brand new wedges like that. My SM5s still have plenty of life, and of course I've got buddies who still want to give my Vokey a try every now and then around the practice green.
