Titleist Amateur Success Continues at the 2017 U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship

The winning ways continued for Titleist players in the top ranks of amateur competition this past week, as a field of 259 regional qualifiers assembled in Atlanta for the 37th playing of the U.S. Mid-Amateur Championship.

Capital City Club and Atlanta National Golf Club each hosted two days of stroke play qualifying as well as the rounds of match play competition for the top-64 finishers. In the end, the competition came down to an all-Titleist golf ball championship match, where the first-time winner crafted a decisive 8 and 6 victory to claim top honors and the prestigious Robert T. Jones Jr. Memorial Mid-Amateur Trophy.

The champion, a 30-year-old firefighter from Brockton, Mass., tied the third-largest winning margin in championship history. In addition to playing the Pro V1 golf ball, the winner relied upon a 917F3 (13.5°) fairway metal, 716 T-MB (2), 716 CB (3-5) and 716 MB (6-PW) irons, and Vokey Design SM6 gap (52°) and TVD K-grind lob (58°) wedges for his success.

Among the rewards awaiting the winner are invitations to the 2018 Masters and exemptions into the field at the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills and U.S. Amateur at Pebble Beach.

This year, among the elite field of dedicated amateur golfers, 204 players trusted a Titleist Pro V1 or Pro V1x golf ball for their success. That's more than five times the nearest competitor with 38 and nearly four times all competitors combined.*

Titleist also led the field across most major club categories including hybrids (73), and iron sets (80). Titleist Vokey Design wedges were the #1 choice in the approach, sand and lob wedge category with 455 Vokey wedges in play, more than seven times the nearest competitor with 64 and more than all other wedges combined.*

The USGA inaugurated the Mid-Amateur in 1981, a national championship for golfers at least 25 years of age with handicaps not exceeding 3.4. The Mid-Am was created to provide a forum for those post-college golfers who have careers and/or families, but still seek national and international caliber competition.

Next up, the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur, which will be contested November 11-16, 2017 at Champions Golf Club in Houston, Texas.

Congratulations to all the competitors who have honored the tradition of amateur golf this year!
