Received my prototype balls yesterday and played 18 holes with it today... as expected it's another great ball from Titleist! Gave one to a friend and he liked it too, but said his test ended on 14 when he hit it in the water. Ha. Thanks to Titleist for giving us a chance to test the new ball.

i received my prototype balls yesterday and will put to them to work this weekend and next week. i am really anxious to test these along with my current Pro V1. thank you Team Titleist for this opportunity!!

Hope I like these balls! Hit them for the first time this morning and loved the feel...

Seriously, how cool is it that we, the purchasing public, are asked to provide feedback for a company's product? Even though I haven't been selected for the last few samples, I find this amazing.
WELL DONE, TITLEIST!!!

Hey, has anybody received any test balls with red numbers?

I received a sleeve of balls with red numbers on Sat the 6th. Yesterday I conducted a putting & chipping test - Test ball vs Pro V1x.
Today I played a round using the Test ball & a Pro V1x. The only comment or conclusion I can make @ this time [further testing needed] is the 'Test Ball' when hit pure just had a 'buttery feel", love it!
Thanks Titleist!

Today, Wed 9/10 was Test round #2. I used the "Test Ball" exclusively on the Front 9 and shot a 38. On the Back 9 I broke out a brand new Pro V1x and used both balls, changed balls on every other hole. Shot a 41, but had some really awful swings.
Diver - overall Distance was about the same with both balls - I would say there wasn't an advantage for either ball.
Fairway woods & Hybrids - the test ball had a slightly lower trajectory and held the line, especially into the wind. I'll give the Test ball a slight advantage over the Pro V1x
Irons & Wedges - I like the very slightly softer feel of the Test ball over the Pro V1x on approach shots, chips & pitches. It just felt smoother. Advantage o the Test ball.
Spin - The Test ball seemed to release a little more then the Pro V1x. On a number of approach & wedge shots the Test ball ran out about 2" more then the Pro V1x. Advantage goes to the Pro V1x
Putting - Depending on where I hit the ball on the face of the putter the Test ball seemed to have a very slightly softer feel.
Durability - Cover on the Test ball sure seemed to be very durable. I've used the same Test ball for 2 rounds.
Overall - For now [testing to continue] I would choose the Pro V1x over the Test ball as a gamer. This is based on the insignificant gain or lack of distance with either ball but with the better spin characteristics of the Pro V1x.

I just completed the survey. After using the Test balls for 5 rounds along with a putting & chipping test I still would choose my normal ball, the Pro V1x.
However, the Test ball did have some great features; a slightly softer feel; slightly longer distance with Fairway woods, Hybrids and Mid Irons.
I appreciated being a part of the beta testing for Titleist balls. Thanks TT!

I did. Great ball as usual from Titleist. Wouldn't expect anything different. I"m guessing I got the Prototype Pro V1X
Mike MHouston, TX
My sleeve of test balls had red numbers. Was very impressed with them. Lots of feel off the club face and maybe a little more distance off the tee than the PV1X. Loved hitting it. Looking forward to trying them out again in the next day or so.
Shane C
Mine were also red numbers. Seems like most of the pics here are with black numbers. The feel on these was similar to the ProV1x, but I would say the durability is better. After a full round I can barely tell the ball was used. I would say that is less the case with a ProV1x.

Finally got a chance to put the TEST balls into play. Thanks TT!! Really liked the feel of these balls, very comparable to Pro V1x that I normally play. Tested the test black and red numbered balls with my entire bag going through a variety of shots to compare and provided feedback based on performance and experience versus my current Pro V 1. Dimple pattern comparison ProVed to Pro V 1 and Pro V1x. The prototype ProVed to perform exceptional well across the board. Played the prototype and ProVed the test results to be exact during multiple playing rounds. I absolutely prefer the black numbered prototype and have put them into play permanently!
XXX-XXX-XXXXBay City, MI
Tested the "prototype" and this was a pro level ball only without the markings, very nice feeling. Unlike the prototype sent last year. This model was played against the TM TP Black, and wow a lot of similarities for me. As a matter of fact I lost a prototype and TP in the same pond off the same tee box, one right after the other. For me no loss in distance or control, looking forward to the final product. Thanks for the opportunity Titleist.
Jeff EJenks, OK
I received and played with the red-numbered prototype. Good feel and super long.
John L
Also received the red numbered prototype. Ball felt slightly harder than my normal Pro V1x. Distance slightly longer off tee, but about the same everywhere else. Less spin all around. Better dispersion off the tee, and more drop and stop around the greens rather than backing up. On a par 3 that is sloped severely back to front, my normal shot normally spins off the front when the pin is up front. Yesterday only backed up a foot or two. Ball flight is also more penetrating into the wind. Hope this becomes next years Pro V1x!

Hi Everyone,
We have received a lot of questions on how to be selected for prototype testing. As many of you know, all Team Titleist members are considered when we have opportunities like the recent test panel. We do our best to include as many Team Titleist members as possible but as you can imagine, we can't include everyone in every test panel.
However, we are planning on more opportunities like this in the future for Team Titleist members along with exclusive sweepstakes and other special giveaways... so stay tuned.
As for the selection process, it varies depending on the opportunity but most are random selections. Also, the more you participate and the more engaged you are with Team Titleist, from posting in the discussions and adding blog comments to completing your profile, the better your chances are at potentially opening the doors to these Team Titleist rewards.
Hope this helps clarify the process.
Thanks again for everyones interest.

I echo the sentiments about Titleist appreciating our feedback!
I played a competitive round today with the prototype. It seemed to have a higher ball flight - so I assume it was spinning more??
I thought the most noticeable difference was around the greens, I thought it checked up a lot better than the Pro Vs I play normally.
Another thing I noticed was that after the round round the ball still looked relatively new!
Sign me up!

You probably should have used them in your tournament. I scored three of my better rounds of the summer with the prototype ball.

Played mine Saturday the 13th. Ball flight was lower off driver and fairway 3 wood. Got good spin as all approach to greens held where they hit. Putting had nice feel off my Scotty.
Only issue was one ball couldn't swim when it hit the lake from 220 out and sank. Otherwise loved the test ball.
David RBrentwood, TN
Have played 3 rounds with test ball. My normal ball is Pro V1 and test ball seems to have similar distance and spin. Great feel on solid shots and on putts.
HotsauceGeorgetown MA
I started my test on the practice green. I chipped both balls and try to hit the "same shot" with each.
Then I played 9 holes of up and down with the V and 9 with the test. I actually got 6 of 9 with both balls...
After that I took them to the course. I played 9 holes and took 2 shots for every shot. I tried to switch up which ball went first to get a feel for it. For the back 9 I took two off the tee and played both balls in match play style. The Pro V dominated and won 3 in 2.
In conclusion I liked the test ball, but I preferred my Pro V's. I felt like I got more spin off the tee and less from irons and wedges. I hit two perfect 5 irons off the fairway and both made a ball mark in nearly the same place. The Pro V stopped about a foot away from the divot and the Test ball rolled all the way to the back of the green. I also couldn't get the test ball to check up as well as I can with the Pro V.
It's not that I disliked the test ball, I just preferred the performance characteristics of my V's.
What did you guys think of the test balls?
Carl ONorth Kingstown, RI
I enjoyed playing the balls I received. I had the nice penetrating flight of the prov1x and the ball stopped a little better than my prov1. I gained about a half a club with each iron. I actually hit a 3 wood off the tee and flew it 260! Haven't done that in quite a while. The ball doesn't have the super high prov1 flight. Around the greens, the ball was responsive and putted beautifully. I actually hit chips out of the rough that stopped quite well. Bunker shots had plenty of spin.....a great overall ball.

Just completed my survey as well. My test ball was "red" which I assumed was a Pro V1x prototype. My results were a bit different than Michael M's. As I usually play the Pro V1x too, this test ball was very similar in distance for all clubs. However, it did feel a bit softer. There were two big differences in the test ball's favor: (1) much more spin with 7-LW (without sacrificing distance; and (2) much more durable -- and I play in a desert/target golf environment, too often (for me) ending up in the desert. It is very rare to find a ball that does not give up distance with the driver, fairway woods and hybrids, spins with clubs that should have more spin (7-LW) while not giving up distance and also be so durable. I mean, for me, that a description of a perfect golf ball. I just wish I would routinely hit it perfectly!! This is, by far, the best Titleist that I have ever hit. As an aside, my wife loved these balls, too; she has a 10 handicap. She plays cally and never liked Titleist in the past because she said they felt too soft and had too much spin. That was not the case with these for her and now, this may be her new ball.
Matthew H
Just completed the survey too, like your self I found the flight pattern or launch of the ball to be higher. Can't say that I noticed any distance improvement but what I did seam to notice was the ball wanted to track straighter instead of take my usual draw. However I feel I need more time comparing side by side. Personally I prefer the lower flatter flight I get with my normal ball the previous generation ProV1x.
Chad MCorvallis, OR
I had almost the exact same experience. Really like how the ball flew off the driver but didn't get the response around the greens from the ProV1 I normally play.
Stuart SCincinnati, OH
Played 3 rounds with the new "black". Seemed to spin less off the driver, had a harder feel. Full and medium wedges seemed to bite better than the current ProV1. Our weather has been changing and recent punching of the greens might have had some effect on the results. Overall, I played some of my best golf of the season with this ball. Lost one and the others are pretty beat up. Not sure if durability is a concern. I usually lose balls before they get worn out!
*** QNeenah, WI
Played the test balls on 9/5 and shot 78 which is my best score in 3 years on a tough course! Great feel and a soft durable cover gave me alot of confidence in hitting all of my shots - especially the my driver! Did lose 2 balls from hitting it to far (water) but I was happy on how well the ball jumped off my clubs on a nice flight pattern. Can't wait to be able to purchase these hopefully in the spring!!!
Thank you Titleist!!
Bob DPottsville, PA
Played several rounds with the new Titleist test balls. Mine had red numbers. The ball launched higher than either the ProV1, ProV1x or bstone e6. It also went farther with all my clubs and stayed on line better. No difference with spin on shots around the green. Soft sound and feel with the putter. Only thing I noticed was that the ball was not as durable. It developed small fissures that were not typical with the other balls. I would like to know what ball the test ball is...I would definitely buy them!
Thanks again Team Titleist for the opportunity to participate in the test!!
Jed (cpt/tpi)cape cod
I played my Pro V1X with the Pro V1X test ball, shot for shot. My experience, they were the same ball. The test ball might be more durable but I really couldn't tell anything else. Both balls performed great. Thanks Titleist for including me in the test process, hope I get to do it again.

I played the black number ball and got just the opposite outcome. Ball was much higher than the ProV1X / Volvik Vista iS that i normally play. I also did not get the spin out of the test ball that I do out of the X. I am hoping that the test ball, black number, is the Pro V1. It felt awesome! My issue was that it was not predictable like the Pro V1x and Vlvik Vista iS. When it comes down to it, FOR MY GAME, the black test ball was a step back.
Do they ever tell us if the test ball is the ball that goes to market or what version of the ball we played? My Pro V1x's have red numbers. Wish I had the feel of the black test ball with the performance of the Pro V1x... Might be the best of both worlds. That is one of the reasons I love the Vista iS so much. Softer feel than Pro V1x and more spin than Pro V1.
Justin FKansas City, MO
I played mine and would echo that the differences are very slight. I'm a 1 handicap and the only real noticeable difference for me was that the prototype didn't seem to drift as much on off center hits. If you cut across one a bit or hit a pull/hook, the ball doesn't curve as dramatically. That was the one main difference I noted. I also noted the cover is more durable. Distance wise and feel wise, there was no difference.

Played 4 rounds so far with the ones I got. On taking them out of the package at first I thought the cover seemed a little harder. Maybe I got an NXT replacement proto I thought. Got out on the course and the ball just plain performed. The ones I got seemed to be 1/2 club or more longer off the irons. Great flight in the 10-15mph breeze. Knock down no problem. I play the Pro V mostly, and this Proto seemed to have a slightly higher ball flight, but not too high. 18th hole is 181 par 3 slightly uphill, usually a good 6 iron, sometimes maybe a 7 if the tee is up a little and maybe a little down wind. Sunday, the tee was up a little, pin in the front, and downwind. Didn't want to go past pin high, as it's all downhill putting back. Went to an 8 iron, get it up in the wind I thought and better short going up then long, knowing it won't stop down wind right? Wrong. Hit 10 feet right of the pin and stopped within a foot. Birdie, match and a skin. So far in 4 rounds this is a great ball. Be playing them this weekend until they are shot. Thanks Titleist for the opportunity to test them again.
Noticed the same on distance, maybe a tad harder feel to them. Able to flight down nicely (as I hit a high shot normally) and they stop on a dime.

I play the PRO V1 as well. Some things I noticed with the Titleist Prototype golf balls I received:
**more roll with driver / 3-wood / 2-hybrid / long irons
**about 1/2 club longer (irons) overall
**slightly to moderately less spin on approach shots / shots around the green
It was great to be able to test these golf balls. Thanks Titleist!!
John COak Ridge, NC
Played test balls 10 days ago. Played erratically so it was hard to assess ball. Teed it up on 18, a long par 4 that usually plays like a par 5. Hit my drive of the day (275), left with 160 to elevated green (usually wind up about 200 out). Came up a little short but chipped up and made putt for par. I attribute great outcome to the ball. Good drive, great feel on chip and putt rolled true.
Thanks Titleist.

These balls are the best balls off of the putter! Fantastic.
David KTampa, FL
Received my sleeve 3 weeks ago and have played several rounds. My results were different than many others. The ball quite frankly was an anomaly to me, in that I experienced several inconsistencies with this ball. I play MP-59 irons and typically play a ProV. The prototype felt hard at times off my irons at times, some what like a V1x feels to me but the test ball didn't perform for me like an X nor did it perform like a true distance ball. On most shots (drives and approach shots) I found it to be no longer than my ProV and was shorter into the wind due to its tendency to balloon on me. It typically would be close to its ball mark on approach shots but it wouldn't "feel" that it was going to bite off the club. Chips and pitches checked up well but again, it didn't feel that they were going to bite, on impact... Putting felt firm but not hard. The cover appears to have a similar ProV dimple pattern and was a brighter white out of the box than a ProV but all 3 balls now have the ProV off white to them that V1's and X's have after a round or two. Durability was quite good with no significant wear after use. All in all, the ball was a head scratcher for me. I'm still not sure what category ball it is but it did not perform at all to the level of the ProV that I normally play does. I do appreciate Titleist having this program and soliciting detailed feedback from amateurs. It's just one example of what makes a Tileist a Titleist...
RocklandgolferJefferson, ME
Just finished taking the survey. I have seen my distance, launch angle, and accuracy with the driver greatly enhanced. My irons also picked up a few extra yards. Spin increased, I'm so old that I can't remember when I spun it like that. But the major thing was the durability of the cover, played over 72 holes with one ball and it looked like it came new out of the box.
Looks like Titleist has another winner!!
Christian GOceanside, CA
I tested them out yesterday and they performed very well, but aside from being just a tad bit softer feeling, I didn't notice anything greatly improved over the current Pro V1. I normally play V1X, but the test balls I received were black, so I'm assuming that means they were standard Pro V1's. In my opinion, there's very little difference between the current Pro V1 and V1X. The difference in spin is probably negligible, at least for my game. I did hear that Titleist was wanting to increase the spin on the new V1 version, but the ball I tested didn't spin any more than normal. I think the current Pro V1 versions are about the best ever and would be difficult to improve on.
Steve SLeominster, MA
I think everyone should stop trying to guess what the prototype ball is and just give an honest opinion of how the ball performed. Thinking it may be a new ProV1 or 1x and basing your answer on that could be doing a dis-service to the test.
Bryan PPalm Coast, FL

2 handicap--thought they were below average off the tee for distance but better around the greens and with shorter clubs than Pro Vi--definitely softer cover. Best drives were 10-15 % less than prov1

Just tested my prototype balls and really liked them. I thought that they went a little farther will a lot less side spin. They went through the wind much better - felt a lot more stable. I thought the spin control with the short irons was improved as well. Overall really liked the ball.
Gary MPasadena, TX
Out of the country and had to wait till last two days to test. Wow what fun. I agree with kt1228. the new prototype had more control down here on the Gulf coast. I like the feel and sound. Well done Titleist.

I've had a couple opportunities to be part of the test panel and I have never been disappointed. I know there are a lot of technical golfers but for me anything with the name Titleist is confidence enough for me. One thing that keeps improving in my opinion is the durability of the cover. One thing that I've learned over the years is that when you look down at the Titleist logo one thing you do not have to worry about is how your ball will perform. Thanks Titleist!!
Dan DSan Jose, CA

Interesting... my observations were the same as your Aaron. I wonder if everyone received the same prototype of golf ball. Some of the characteristics I read here for the prototype they received were different. Great ball, I liked it a lot and would consider changing to this one once I found out what model it is. Thanks Titleist!
Bernard WSaratoga, CA
I also received mine about two weeks ago. Red numbers. First ball lasted for 32 holes but then hit some cement and too scuffed up to continue. 2nd ball only lasted for four holes and then into the water. Third ball next round into the water off the first tee. I liked these balls quite a bit, but I usually play with ProV1X balls. The "Test" balls seemed to spin a little more, especially on mid to short iron shots into the green. My ProV1X balls usually stop pretty close to where I hit, but these actually backed up quite a bit. The test balls are very durable but generally the ProV1X is a little longer for me off the driver and longer irons.

My swing is undergoing revision so my ball striking was inconsistent. Some good and some bad.
I need to spend more time to give a fair test of the ball. Thank you Titleist!

I found the balls to have less feel on impact than the Pro V1x. In the end, I found the ball to have less feel on impact, but ultimately found it to be a very good golf ball. I found it to be very durable and in one case found the damage from a cart path impact to be almost imperceptible.
I think I would choose the current Pro V1x over the prototype ball, but in the few times I venture into the non Pro V1x realm of balls, I found this ball to be equal or superior to the non Titleist branded golf balls I play.
John M
I usually play in the 90s, and have yet to break 90. . . I'm pretty consistent when my ballstriking is good, and in 2 rounds with the prototypes and average ballstriking for me, I noticed a few differences with these from my usual ProV1x:
These balls felt harder, flew higher with straighter flight, and had less backspin when coming in hot to the green.
I also noticed that it was harder to shape shots, which can be good or bad I suppose. . .
These were tougher around the green. I had a couple pitch shots that I hit slightly thin, and I paid dearly for it with the prototypes. They just felt like I compressed them a lot, even with simple pitches.
All my mid to short irons and wedges had right at 10 yards of added distance. The approach shots did have good check on the greens, but not quite to the level of the ProV1X in my opinion.
All in all a great ball for a higher handicapper like myself, but I think I like the ProV1X better, if for nothing else, just because I'm used to them.
Thank you for the opportunity Titleist!

How'd everyone get the test balls?
Luck of the draw...certain criteria needed to be met I think as well.

How were you able to sign up for R&D?

Me too! Last time I got them in October and it made it difficult to get out with the changing weather.
Cleared my calendar and plan to spend the day at the course starting off with a tee time at dawn.

Chris RLittle Rock, AR
Wish I would get lucky enough to be able to test some.
Fred ClossDenton, TX
Played the prototype ball today - the other guys were asking what it was, what changed and how do they get some of them. So far, I haven't really noticed a difference between the prototype and ProV1, but will be conducting a comparison of tee shots, 5 iron shots and short pitches (30 - 15 yards) tomorrow afternoon.
Jimmie AGulfport, MS
Same feelings as you, I played 2 ball with one being the prototype and the other my normal ball with not much change. The prototype was a bit softer and less spin though with about the same control.
Walt SMckenzie, TN
I just received mine today. Great timing, playing in a tournament.

I haven't gotten in on this round, but I hit some from the square/triangle batch and was super impressed! I agree, I think its a great way to get honest, non biased feed back on how the balls play from the general public. THANK YOU TEAM TITLEIST!!!!
Eric WAustin, TX
Thanks Titleist, received test balls yesterday. Quick test with putter, feels great, like all Titleist balls. Looking forward to "testing"over weekend.

My colleague at work got a sleeve over the weekend and was nice enough to give me one of the 3. IMO it feels like a ProV1 but can't wait to get out and test. Playing tomorrow.
I did talk to another TT member last night who received a sleeve and loves it. "A little more durable a little less spinny".
A little more durable i like!
Really looking forward to hearing the results from the TT community.

Wow, got test balls today, will play with them first T time in the morning. So glad to be able to do the test. As you can see with the other posts, it is a real honor for a mid teen handicap to be able to do testing for Titleist.

ASLO RECIEVED MINE. FIRST TIME I HAVE GOTTEN THE TEST BALLS. THANKS TT
John CAgawam, MA
I've played three rounds with the prototype golf ball. Feels harder than my Pro V1. Do not like the feel off of the driver. Spins roughly the same as a Pro V1X, feels the same as a Pro V1X off of the irons, too. When I flight the wedges down, the prototype spins and grabs more than a Pro V1X. The prototype gets high marks when playing in very windy conditions. No real difference in putter feel for me.
Overall, I'm sticking with the Pro V1 for normal playing conditions and the Pro V1X for wet conditions.

I enjoyed playing the new Proto ball. Just completed the survey on the balls. In my case there was a difference in feel mainly on tee shots with the driver/4 wood...so the difference appear more at high swing speeds/ball speeds.
Day two of testing for the TEST balls on Sept 5. Weather was very warm and muggy, temps around 90 degrees for the day. Played very well w them today. We play 3 nine hole matches against 3 different groups. The biggest thing I could notice today was on the green. These balls rolled terrifically!!! I had 2 birdies in my first round and 3 in my second round for a 68. They rolled as nice as could be....every time I got the correct line, the ball did not deviate and felt soft off of the face of the putter.
The final 9 was as great, but I think I got a little tired after walking in the hot steamy New England weather. I didn't have has much energy, but the balls were still excellent from tee to green.
one more day of the tournament, the final 18 with holes of winning my division and then on to playoffs for what I hope is a winning team w my partner and of course my new Titleist TESt ball
more to come tomoroow
thanks again for including me as part of the R&D test process!!!

Buddy and I tried out the new proto "Test" balls and found them to have a harder feel and but similar distance to regular ProV1....
Kevin BNew york, NY
I found them harder too, with a little less spin, but i didn't mind the harder feel
John WStanley, NC
Interesting comments from a few regarding harder feel and less distance when compared to the ProV1X. I found the test ball to be essentially the same distance with the driver, but seemed to stay on the face longer. The feel on all iron shots from five through wedges was soft, and reminded me of the old balata. I had the same feeling of softness with the putter, which imparted a confidence that the ball was going where intended. We are all different, so I guess that's why we have so many testers. I'm not saying you are all wrong, just that my impression was different. I find that interesting, and I surely hope to be included in future tests.

Ball felt like it fell right between ProV1 and ProV1x.
